The Times of Israel reports that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called off a retaliatory strike against Iran following a call with Joe Biden.

“Several members of Israel’s war cabinet had been in favor of launching a response attack, but the lack of serious damage caused by Iran, in addition to Netanyahu’s conversation with Biden, led to it being called off,” the outlet reports.

According to reports, Joe Biden told Netanyahu during a call on Saturday that the United States would not support an Israeli counterattack against Iran.

Joe Biden Reportedly Said United States Will Not Support Israeli Counterattack Against Iran

“Biden and his senior advisers are highly concerned an Israeli response to Iran’s attack on Israel would lead to a regional war with catastrophic consequences,” Axios reported.

Biden’s comments followed Iran attacking Israel with hundreds of missiles and drones on Saturday.

Iran’s attack followed a suspected Israeli airstrike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus.

Biden reportedly told Netanyahu: “You got a win. Take the win.”

The Jerusalem Post noted that U.S. officials considered Israel’s interception of over 300 drones and missiles a strategic victory that may not require further retaliation.

Some reports indicated that Israeli Air Force base sustained damage during the attack.

However, the extent of the damage is unclear.

From The Jerusalem Post:

One potential course of action, a retaliatory strike initially proposed by some cabinet members, was called off following a phone call between Netanyahu and Biden on Saturday. This decision came in light of the relatively minor damage as a result of Iran’s attacks.

The specifics of the conversation between Biden and Netanyahu were not disclosed by the officials.

However, this development underscores the ongoing discussions within the Israeli government regarding the appropriate response to the Iranian aggression, with some in the Israeli government calling for a swift retaliation.

Biden’s conversation with Netanyahu reiterated the United States’ commitment to Israel’s security, which following the attacks, Biden called “ironclad.” In his subsequent public statement, President Biden hinted at a preference for restraint and the need for careful consideration of the situation before any further actions are taken.
