POLITICS: WATCH: Trump TORCHES CBS Reporter Over National Guard Shooting Question: β€œAre You Stupid?”

Two uniformed members of the West Virginia National Guard were shot Wednesday, November 26, 2025, just blocks from the White House in Washington, D.C.; CBS reported that National Guard member Sarah Beckstrom was killed and Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe was left hospitalized in critical condition.

The suspect, 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national, was apprehended at the scene after being shot and wounded by other National Guard members who responded to the attack, Fox News documented. Authorities say the attack was targeted and not random.

On Thursday, November 27, 2025, President Donald Trump confronted CBS White House correspondent Nancy Cordes at a press appearance, angrily challenging the idea that vetting had failed. When Cordes cited a DOJ Inspector General finding of vetting, Trump fired back: β€œBecause they let him in. Are you stupid? Are you a stupid person? Because they came in on a plane along with thousands of other people who shouldn’t be here. And you’re just asking questions, because you’re a stupid person,” Fox News reported.

Trump added: β€œAnd they came in, and they were unvetted, they were unchecked. There were many of them. And they came in on big planes, and it was disgraceful,” Fox News noted, framing the shooting as a direct consequence of the chaotic Afghanistan airlift.

Trump also posted on Truth Social: β€œThis is part of the horrendous airlift from Afghanistan. Hundreds of thousands of people poured into our Country totally unvetted and unchecked. We will fix it, but will never forget what Crooked Joe Biden and his Thugs did to our Country!” β€” a post cited in reporting by Fox News.

CBS captured the exchange that triggered the confrontation: Nancy Cordes asked, β€œYour DOJ IG just reported this year that there was thorough vetting by DHS and by the FBI of these Afghans who were brought into the U.S., so why do you blame the Biden administration?” CBS reported, and that question set off the tense on-camera rebuke from the president.

The suspect’s pathway into the United States traces back to the chaotic 2021 withdrawal: reporters cite that Lakanwal entered under β€œOperation Allies Welcome” in September 2021, when roughly 120,000 people were evacuated during an intense 17-day airlift in August 2021 that involved nearly 800 aircraft, according to material cited by Fox News. Former DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas previously stated in September 2021 that β€œthe U.S. had properly vetted these refugees before bringing them into the U.S., flagging anyone who had concerning backgrounds,” a quote included in the reporting Fox News documented.

Reporting also indicates Lakanwal drove across the country from his residence in Bellingham, Washington, to the capital β€” an element officials point to in describing the November 26 attack as planned and targeted rather than spontaneous, Fox News reported.

Former President Joe Biden, who is not in office, posted on X that he was β€œheartbroken” over the attack and called for all to unite against β€œviolence of any kind,” a reaction relayed in coverage by Fox News. The differing narratives β€” DOJ IG findings of β€œthorough vetting” cited by CBS versus the president’s charge that thousands entered β€œunvetted” β€” are now the political fight lines conservatives say demand answers.

Beyond the immediate human toll β€” the death of Sarah Beckstrom and the critical injuries of Andrew Wolfe, both West Virginia National Guard members sworn in less than 24 hours before the attack β€” the administration is using the incident to press for sweeping policy changes. According to available reporting, President Trump has unveiled plans to β€œpermanently halt migration from Third World nations and reverse Biden’s autopen admissions,” a policy shift highlighted in Fox News.

What comes next: legal proceedings against Rahmanullah Lakanwal, more disclosures about his background and motive, and intense scrutiny of what β€œthorough vetting” meant in 2021. Expect statements from West Virginia Guard leadership and further push-and-pull between the White House and critics over whether the scale and speed of the 2021 airlift created gaps. For now, conservatives see confirmation of long-standing warnings about mass admissions and inadequate vetting β€” and the president isn’t letting the issue fade quietly, CBS reported.

Unanswered questions remain: What did the DOJ IG actually find about vetting? Were there flags missed in Lakanwal’s records? Did post-admission monitoring exist and fail? Those answers will shape whether this becomes a legal case only β€” or a sweeping immigration reform moment for the Trump administration to use as justification for hardline changes.
