Rihanna made her first appearance at A$AP Rocky’s assault trial on Wednesday.
The “Love on the Brain” singer, 36, dressed in all black and sat in the gallery at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center in Downtown Los Angeles between Rocky’s mother, Renee Black, and his sister, Erika B. Mayers.
Her court appearance comes on the heels of her date night with Rocky in Los Angeles on Tuesday evening.
The “Praise the Lord” rapper, 36, is charged with two felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm related to an alleged 2021 shooting incident in Hollywood.
Rocky is accused of firing shots at Terell Ephron, who also goes by A$AP Relli. He claims the alleged shots “grazed his knuckles.”
Rocky, who has two sons, RZA and Riot, with Rihanna, has pleaded not guilty, with his lawyer, Joe Tacopina, claiming he committed no crime. If convicted, the artist faces up to 24 years in prison.
Rihanna’s presence, meanwhile, has been a factor in the case from the start.
During jury selection, Deputy District Attorney John Lewin asked a prospective juror — a woman — if she could deliver a guilty verdict if Rihanna was present in the courtroom.
“What if Rihanna comes here to court. Is it going to be hard for you to look over there and see the defendant’s family and deliver a guilty verdict?” Lewin asked, per the Associated Press.
According to the news outlet, the woman took a long pause before responding yes.
The AP reported that the prosecution and the defense took two and a half days to select the final set of jurors. A woman who is a podcast editor and actor and a man who has worked for over 20 years at Trader Joe’s made the cut.
Rocky denies the shooting allegations, stating he used a prop pistol that only fires blanks to defuse their fight.
However, prosecutors allege that tensions between the pair escalated after a fallout over their personal and professional relationship, which led to a confrontation.
Police officers searched the scene but found no physical evidence of a shooting, such as shell casings or bullet holes. Two days later, Relli reportedly brought shell casings to the police, claiming he retrieved them from the scene.
Rocky’s lawyer is adamant that Relli’s claims are an attempt at extorting his client.
The prosecutors offered Rocky a deal that would have required him to plead guilty to one of the charges in exchange for a recommended 180 days in jail and three years of probation. He turned down their offer.
Rihanna and Rocky first started dating in 2019. She has largely kept quiet on his legal troubles — but the two have continued publicly supporting one another at industry events.
During a chat with Interview magazine last spring, Rihanna got candid about their relationship.
“We’ve known each other for a long time. I’ve seen him in relationships. He’s seen me in relationships. We’ve seen each other outside of relationships,” she shared. “We knew what we’re capable of, and the trouble that we could bring to each other’s lives. We can make or break each other’s hearts. And so we started dating with a lot of caution.”
