An Australian coroner’s court determined Wednesday that the cause of death of health and wellness influencer Stacey Warnecke, 30, was due to severe blood loss after having gone through a risky alternative birth practice late September.
Stacey’s husband, Nathan Warnecke, first announced his wife’s death in an Instagram post in October. He told his wife’s tens of thousands of followers that while she successfully gave birth to their first born son Axel, “unforeseen and extremely rare” complications arose, and she was taken to the hospital where she died.
“Stacey was a child of the universe, one that loved above all else to live a simple, stress free life. She was most at home in nature, surrounded by trees and sand at her feet,” the husband wrote.
Warnecke, who described herself as a “low tox nutritionist and food content creator,” was “profoundly affected” by COVID-19 mandates, counsel assisting Rachel Ellyard told Australian outlet 9News.
Ellyard argued that Warnecke’s concerns influenced her decision-making during pregnancy and her choice to have a “freebirth,” the practice of giving birth without medical assistance.
Ellyard said Warnecke’s condition rapidly declined after delivering her son, and when paramedics arrived, she looked yellow and was struggling to breathe.
Warnecke was rushed to the hospital where the supply of her blood type was completely exhausted, and she eventually died from complications following a postpartum hemorrhage, according to the outlet.

Dr. Nicole Rankins, host of “All About Pregnancy & Birth” podcast, told HuffPost earlier this year that “freebirth is unnecessarily dangerous and risky: I do not support it.”
“I support hospital births as well as community births (home or birth center) with a trained birth attendant,” Rankins said. “All of these options have a low risk of complications and have someone present who can address complications.”
Warnecke did have a doula present during the birth, Emily Lal, however given how she refused to give a statement to the police and “extensively cleaned” the house after Warnecke was taken to the hospital, Lal is part of the coroner’s investigation into her death, according to 9News.
HuffPost was unable to reach Lal for a comment, and her Instagram page looks to have been deactivated or deleted.
This would not be the first time Lal faced controversy over her birthing practice and beliefs. A newborn baby girl died in 2022 after the mother delivered using a home-birthing pool she rented from Lal, People reported in August.
The Victorian Health Complaints Commissioner issued a warning not long after Warnecke’s death, announcing an investigation into Lal. She was placed on probation on Oct. 21, and the commissioner encouraged the public to not engage with Lal in relation to general health services.
“This decision to investigate was made based on information received by the Health Complaints Commissioner alleging that Ms Lal is facilitating and/or participating in homebirths which may put both mothers and babies at risk,” the commissioner wrote.
