If there’s one thing I hate about bathrooms, it’s how damp they feel after a shower or bath. Wet towels are definitely part of the problem, but for me, fixing a mold-prone, moist bathroom came down to one absurdly easy change I wish I’d made years ago: switching to a stone bath mat.
Typically made of diatomaceous earth, a material similar to a soft, powdery clay, these bath mats replace the typical fabric ones with a slab of sturdy stone. They are highly absorbent, never stay damp, odor-proof and extremely versatile — basically the opposite of fabric bath maths. Today, I found one that’s only $30 on Amazon right now, and it’s so good that other reviewers say they’re “never going back to ‘traditional’ bath mats.” At this price, I truly recommend grabbing one (or two) and ditching fabric mats for good.
Durable, porous and quick-drying, these stone bath mats get rid of bathroom moisture in no time.
Compared to a typical fabric bath mat, stone mats are exactly what they sound like: a solid slab of stone you step onto after a shower or bath. As water runs off your body and hits the surface, it’s immediately absorbed into the stone and then slowly dissipates over time. Instead of acting like a soggy sponge, it behaves more like water soaking into a terracotta plant pot. No trapped moisture, no odors, no standing water, and, best of all, no extra laundry (!!!).
The top of the mat is lightly textured for grip, while the bottom is smooth. It also comes with an anti-slip rubber pad, so it won’t skid across the floor while you’re standing on it.
Maintenance is also simple. To clean it, just wipe it with a damp cloth. I usually scrub mine down with some disinfectant spray. If it ever gets a stain, the brand recommends using a thinpiece of sandpaper to scrub it off. And unless you’re leaping directly onto it straight out of the shower every day, this thing can last a lifetime. (I don’t own this exact model, but I’ve had a stone bath mat for over seven years and it still looks as good as new with proper care.)
They’re not just useful as bath mats, either.
Bathrooms aside, these stone slabs are also great for any area in the home to catch extra moisture you don’t want linger. It can be used as a dish drying mat, for example, or placed underneath a pet water bowl to catch any runoff.
