When it comes to driving, dashcams can offer a level of safety that can put even the most anxious minds at ease. As one reviewer of Garmin’s Mini 2 puts it, it’s like “cheap insurance” — if you ever get involved in a car accident, witness a hit-and-run or see any traffic shenanigans, you could have video proof of it. That can be useful for proving liability to insurance companies or capturing reckless drivers. So, it’s not a bad idea to invest in something that could potentially save you money in the long run. We found a deal on the Garmin Mini 2, a bestselling dashcam with over 2,600 5-star ratings, that knocks its typical $129.99 price tag to the lowest of the year: $99.99.

It shoots at 1080p, is easy to install, features a live view mode so you can always see what’s going on from your car’s POV and is roughly the size of a pair of car keys. $100 is practically a steal for helping you ensure your vehicle’s protected. The Mini 2 dashcam has a wide-angle 140-degree lens to shoot 1080p video in crisp detail, plus night vision on for low-light environments — and several reviewers report that it’s actually saved their butts (and insurance bills) by helping them provide proof. “I installed this in my new car, and a month later, someone ran a stop and tore off the front of my car,” says reviewer Michael B. “Their insurance company took one look at the dashcam video and said, ‘we accept full responsibility.’ I’d say the money was well spent!”

Another reviewer, Zg, shared their accident experience and how the cam’s auto-capture feature saved them from insurance costs. “My wife was in a complicated, many-lane traffic circle when someone tried to turn into her and hit her driver’s side door,” they said. “She was so shaken up she totally forgot we had a dashcam at all. Once she got home safe we remembered that we had it and we saw that our Garmin had automatically recorded the incident. What a great feature! The video didn’t show the car hitting her (since it was pointed forward not at the driverside door), but it did show all of the traffic circle signage as the incident happened and the other car, so it was clear that we were following the rules of the road and the other car didn’t. Our insurance was able to use the video to quickly determine that we were not at fault. I am so glad that we had it, and can’t recommend it enough!”

The dashcam works by continuously recording video as you drive, writing over older footage once the SD card is full (it supports up to 512 GB, though the minimum is 8 GB) and dumping all that video data via cloud storage. It connects to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and you can check your videos using your Garmin smartphone app. You can also use that app to view your camera’s live feed, whenever needed. It also supports voice controls so you can start and stop recordings or take snapshots.

Of course, dashcams may feel intimidating because they are such a techy item, but many reviewers say they’re easy to install. One reviewer says it took less than 15 minutes to run the power cable through the top of their car’s windshield, feed it underneath their dashboard and plug it into their car’s USB port. The package includes a mounting kit while a suction cup securely holds the camera on your windshield. Also, the cam is so small that a user says it’s “nearly invisible” once mounted.

At $100, it’s a no-brainer safety investment for hitting the road, and as one reviewer says, “This is honestly all you need.” If you need more encouragement though, read on for more promising reviews. Just hurry — we doubt this deal will last much longer.

“You don’t need high resolution because you’d still need to be in an ideally lighted environment to benefit from it. I bought this perfectly adequate 1080p dash cam only 4 months ago and 3 weeks ago, someone side swiped me on the highway. The video I provided immediately exonerated me from all liability. I was told from the other driver’s insurance that they blamed me, but my video proved them wrong. My car is getting repaired now and they’re even replacing my aftermarket wheels. If I had to pay for the damages myself, yikes.” — Marc

“I got this just to have in the case of an accident that was disputed. I don’t need a screen on the dashcam as I will only be looking at it after an incident. This fits the bill perfectly. It is so small it almost disappears on the windshield. Connecting to it with my cell phone can be a bit cumbersome, but I do not expect to do it ofterìn. But, if I DO need footage from it, I can either grab it with my phone and send a link to my computer OR I can just pop the chip out and download the footage. The video quality is very good. Not like a high quality movie, but clear, crisp and with the details obvious. Price also was a plus. Installation was a breeze. Just ran the cord across the top of the windshield, down by the door, under the dashboard and to the USB adapter. Took all of 15 minutes.” — Scott

“Bought this as a gift. Seems like drivers generally are distracted, and it’s a good idea to be able to document issues in case of an accident. The recipient of the gift has ADHD and was concerned that these devices generally can be distracting, so I read a lot of reviews and found that people said that this one was not as distracting as some of the other options. The recipient is very happy with it, is able to use it without being distracted by it. They have caught multiple bad driving incidents (fortunately no accidents!) with this Garmin. Great product!” — PA Shopper

“Initially, I was skeptical of purchasing this product, because of the mixed reviews I read. But nonetheless, I still purchased this product with high hopes. So far, two months later I am still loving everything about it! This Garmin mini dash cam, paired with a Sandisk 256 GB High Endurance SD card has proved that it can constantly record high quality film, without worrying about constantly changing out the SD card. This dash cam has amazing features, such as whenever you brake hard it automatically detects the movement and saves the film to your Garmin app. Personally, I have already used this film for a claim, as someone’s tire blew out all over my bumper on the interstate! Garmin products by default are top notch quality, and I have recommended this dashcam to everyone that I know that has been searching for a new dash cam! It is small and compact, to where you can’t even see it while driving (depending on placement). Plus, Garmin provides enough wire to where you can completely snake the wire around your vehicle and not have to see any eye-sore wiring! 10/10 product by Garmin.” — Ashton Harrington

“[…] In conclusion, the Mini Garmin Dash Cam is a remarkable piece of technology that fits seamlessly into any vehicle without compromising on recording quality. Its compact size and unobtrusive design allow for discreet installation, while its clear recording capabilities ensure that every detail is captured accurately. The user-friendly interface and intuitive controls make it accessible to drivers of all experience levels. Despite a minor connectivity concern, the Mini Garmin Dash Cam stands out as a reliable and effective tool for enhancing road safety and providing a sense of security while driving. Whether you’re a seasoned driver or a commuter, this dash cam is a valuable asset that offers peace of mind and the ability to capture important moments on the road.” — Jh (This review has been edited for length.
