SCIENCE & TECH: Tell Me Lies season 3 makes Lucy and Stephen a total yawnfest — but one budding new romance could soon be dangerous

WARNING: spoilers for Tell Me Lies season 3 episodes 1 and 2 ahead.

Since Hulu and Disney+ introduced us to teen drama sensation Tell Me Lies in 2022, we’ve known all too well that Lucy (Grace Van Patten) and Stephen (Jackson White) are a match made in hell.

Sadly, we’re stuck with the pair for the long haul, given that the entire concept is structured around eight years of their relationship, flashing between the present day in 2015 and their sophomore university year in 2009.

The biggest downside of Tell Me Lies season 3 (although there’s not many) is we’ve got more of the same . As episode 1 begins, Lucy and Stephen are officially back together, much to the dismay of Pippa (Sonia Mena) and Bree (Catherine Missal). However, it all ended in tears by midway through episode 2.

Why? Cast your mind back to the season 2 finale and you might remember Evan (Branden Cook) admitted to Stephen that he cheated on Bree with Lucy. Lucy has yet to reveal this to Stephen directly, and he’s stewing himself out of a relationship in response.

This obviously isn’t the end of their romance, which is almost an annoying inevitability. But if you were paying close enough attention to Tell Me Lies season 3 episodes 1 and 2, you might have noticed the show’s creators plant the seed of a budding new romance that could quickly turn dangerous.

Bree and Wrigley could fall into the messiest relationship yet in Tell Me Lies season 3

After the party that led to the gang getting off their heads on MDMA, Wrigley (Spencer House) and Bree have a quiet moment to themselves. Sat at a bus stop in the early hours of the morning, they share their worries and struggles with each other, with Wrigley feeling validated by Bree agreeing that his grief after Drew’s (Benjamin Wandsworth) death will “probably never get easier”.

They pass out before going their separate ways as the sun comes up, but their conversation is a testament to how immediately vulnerable they’re each prepared to be around the other. Nothing romantic happened between the two, but it easily could have.

As an outsider looking in, it felt as though this was the first time Wrigley and Bree had felt completely seen and understood by someone else. What with Drew’s death in season 2 and Bree’s ill-advised affair with married professor Oliver (Tom Ellis), this moment of emotional freedom almost isn’t surprising.

But where do things go from here? The two are seen talking candidly again in episode 2, but I think things could go even further in the rest of season 3. Pippa has hooked up with ex-girlfriend Diana (Alicia Crowder) again, while Bree still doesn’t know the truth about Evan and Lucy. If that’s bad enough to give Lucy an anxiety attack, think about what will happen when the truth comes out.

Will all of this push Wrigley and Bree together? At some point in time yes (we know Evan and Bree are set to wed in 2015). Move over Lucy and Stephen… finally.
