In a history-making discovery, archaeologists have unearthed an incredibly vivid and well-preserved Roman mosaic floor in a farmer’s orchard in eastern Turkey, not far from the old Roman Empire’s border with Persia. The floor was first found by the farmer, who dug up a section of it while planting trees, and once he’d revealed his discovery to the authorities a team of experts were dispatched to complete the excavation.
The lavishly decorated floor, which is 904 square feet (84 square meters) in size, is believed to be the largest of its type ever found in Turkey. This stunning Roman-era mosaic has not been precisely dated as of yet. But it is thought to have been installed sometime in the later part of the Roman period, so could perhaps be from the third or fourth century AD.
The imagery on the mosaic is almost exclusively features hunting scenes (of animals stalking or chasing other animals). Especially notable is an image of a rare Anatolian leopard, which is depicted capturing an ostrich by the neck. Other scenes are of a lion chasing a mountain goat, a bear pursuing a stag, and greyhound dogs cornering a wild boar. Pheasants, ducks, and geese are also depicted, with roses and pomegranate trees forming some of the backdrop.
