The remains of nearly 200 animals found in Mexico’s ancient city-state of Teotihuacán are helping reconstruct history. These animal bones were unearthed in four chambers within the Moon Pyramid and date back nearly 2,000 years, to the prime years of Mesoamerica’s most enigmatic civilization.
Teotihuacán, one of the first megacities of the Western Hemisphere and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, is situated about 30 miles northeast of Mexico City. It is home to one of the most important ceremonial landscapes in Mesoamerica and was once the most influential metropolis in the region. It is especially known for its two gigantic pyramids, the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon, and at the height of its prosperity it may have been home to as many as 125,000 people.
