“Those panicking” over Team Trump’s “desire to dismantle the Department of Education” should recall, cautions Philip Hamburger at The Wall Street Journal: “One of the leading advocates of creating such a department was the Ku Klux Klan” — which made its creation an “explicit goal.”
The Klan sought to send every child to public school to “re-Americanize” the nation.
Nativists thought foreigners and “religious diversity — especially Catholicism” — threatened Protestantism.
Their support “is a reminder that federalizing education inevitably homogenizes it. Centralized control threatens innovation, limits parental independence, shapes the minds of nascent voters and enables government influence over public opinion, the mechanism” by which people hold it accountable.
The Constitution never authorized “federal power over education.” It’s time to “live up to that ideal.”
Mideast desk: Make Palestinians Citizens Somewhere
President Trump recently shocked the world by suggesting Palestinians vacate Gaza, but Commentary’s Seth Mandel argues that “there are other, less controversial policies that would have the effect of improving the lives of Palestinians” while “increasing Israel’s security.”
“Trump should start by insisting the few remaining Palestinian refugees from 1948 and their many descendants be granted citizenship, or at least permanent residence with a path to naturalization, in their host countries,” including Egypt, Lebanon and Syria.
So far, only Jordan has assimilated Palestinians into its citizenry.
Other “Arab states made a conscious, concerted decision to make Palestinians a permanent underclass so they could be used as a cudgel against Israel,” with the lingering promise of Palestinians’ right to return.
“If Trump wants to save Israeli and Palestinian lives and keep the peace in the Middle East, he should use US leverage to end the permanent refugee status of Palestinians.”
Libertarian: USAID Failed on COVID
“In the case of the most recent pandemic,” argues Reason’s Christian Britschgi, “it’s fair to say that USAID’s pandemic prevention efforts were a failure.”
Not only did “the agency’s programs for predicting and stopping a global virus outbreak in the human population” miss COVID-19, those same programs also “directed millions of dollars” to EcoHealth Alliance and its subgrantee, the Wuhan Institute of Virology — which both “feature prominently” in the possibility that COVID-19 was an engineered virus that escaped from a lab.”
“Musk’s definitive statement that USAID was funding ‘bioweapons research,’” is overblown, but: “People should be circumspect about totally dismissing that possibility as well.”
From the left: Progs Should Support Trump’s FBI Reforms
“There are many who dislike Trump yet cheer for” his efforts to reform the FBI “because they dislike” the agency “even more,” explains Christian Parenti at UnHerd.
“My father was targeted by the FBI for his opposition to the Vietnam War and American imperialism in general,” and the agency “has a long and sordid history of framing people; disrupting, misdirecting, and destroying progressive social movements.”
But “since retaking office, Trump has dismissed dozens of officials at the FBI and the Department of Justice.”
And, if confirmed, Trump’s pick to head the agency, Kash Patal, plans to redirect the FBI to “solving workaday crimes,” which would be “in stark contrast to the kind of highly politicised activity that has turned half of the country against the bureau.”
Progressives “who know their FBI history should stand with the Trumpians in this tug-of-war.”
From the right: Dems Double Down on Losing
Showing Democrats haven’t learned from November’s defeat, “gun control activist and social media loudmouth David Hogg was elected as a vice chairman of the Democratic National Committee,” sneers the Washington Examiner’s Kimberly Ross.
It’s not just that “Hogg’s brand is extreme”; Dems in Congress are using “Nazi” to describe President Trump and his supporters and vowing to bring “Articles of Impeachments.”
The party is still “clinging to the rhetoric that brought it a resounding defeat.”
These “leftist narratives and antics” won’t win the midterms; Dems must “veer off the road they’re seemingly determined to stay on” or “they will only have themselves to blame.”
