Are you searching for something special this Christmas season? Do you sense something is missing, but you are not sure what it is? You may not find it under the Christmas tree. Perhaps what you are looking for is in your hidden center.

“The heart is our hidden center, beyond the grasp of our reason and of others; only the Spirit of God can fathom the human heart and know it fully” [CCC 2563]. That is where our Lord dwells if we allow Him. Is our heart open to our Savior?

Many of us struggle. Do we really know what is in our heart or is it uncharted territory? Do we grapple with doubts, fears, and feelings of being lonely, unworthy, or unlovable? As St. Paul prays, may God strengthen us “with power through his Spirit in the inner self, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith” [Ephesians 3:16–17].

Strength of Faith

As we celebrate the Christmas season, may we ponder the Blessed Virgin Mary’s strength of faith. Mary’s faith, her yes to God, opened the way for us to receive Jesus Christ our Savior in our lives. The Holy Spirit came upon Mary, who was all human, and the power of the Most High overshadowed her so that Christ could be born for the sake of our redemption and salvation.

Mother of All People, given to us by her Son Jesus, Mary calls to us, sharing her faith, as well as her hope and love. When we pray to Our Lady, in all humility, Mary guides our way to our Savior who unites us with God the Father and Holy Spirit. The fullness of God’s grace and greatness of God’s love shines through Mary’s Immaculate Heart—the perfect dwelling for our Lord.

Mary prays for us, guarding our faith and shielding us from evil! Our Blessed Mother, by her intercessions, “brings us the gifts of eternal salvation” [CCC 969]. When we accept those gifts, when we accept God’s grace of faith, our yes opens us for Christ—the manifestation of God’s love—to enter the heart of our lives. Do we believe, as Mary believed, in the fullness and greatness of God?

All We Have to Give

What is in our heart? It is the place of encounter, the place of truth, the place of decision [CCC 2563]. There we face ourselves as we truly are if we have the courage. Therefore, do we want to live in Christ and Christ to live in us? Are we willing to open our heart and give our Lord all that we are inside?

Worry not, God formed our inmost being [Psalm 139:13]. He knows each of us better than we know ourselves. We are precious in God’s eyes. “For we are his handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works that God has prepared in advance, that we should live in them” [Ephesians 2:10].

May we pray that God give us strength to faithfully believe in his love so we may have the power to say yes. May we be united with our Lord in our daily living through our joys, works, and sorrows for the glory of God. Where our Lord dwells, may the gifts of salvation shine through our hidden center and may we share the love of God with everyone we meet. Amen!
