Matthew 21:23
23 As he taught in the temple, the top priests and elders of the people rushed up to him and asked, “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?”
Jesus often talked about what the Bible meant in a deeper way. He never used other teachers or oral traditions to back up what He taught. Unless they had learned the whole Old Testament by heart and been appointed by two other rabbis who had done the same, other rabbis always taught by citing what other, more respected rabbis had said. These special teachers were allowed to teach on their own. “A new teaching with authority” is what people said about Jesus (Mark 1:22–27)!
What the chief priests and elders really wanted to know from Jesus was, “By what authority are you doing these things? Who gave you this authority?” The Bible says in John 5:31–37 that Jesus did have two witnesses: John the Baptist and the Father in heaven. He also said that the wonders He did showed that He was powerful (John 10:25). He didn’t have to explain Himself to people, but He did try to show them proof of His power.
That’s why Jesus asked those who were questioning Him where John’s authority came from. They couldn’t answer because they didn’t believe John was a prophet, but other people did. These church leaders wouldn’t listen when John or Jesus told them to turn away from their sins. Being proud of how much we know about religion can keep us from seeing the truth.
We have power because Jesus has power over us. He sent the disciples out into the world (Matthew 28:18–20), and we follow His Spirit when we quote His words and do what He tells us to do.
Think about this: We should always look inside ourselves to see if what we do and say is based on Jesus’ teachings or on religious beliefs. Are we fighting about a point to show how righteous we are, or are we sharing the clear truth of the Bible out of love and following the Spirit’s lead? Are the fruits of the Spirit clear in the way we talk to each other (Galatians 5:22–23)?
