Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed on Monday that the United States would “not be providing military aid to the Russians” when asked about the military assistance the U.S. has provided to Ukraine throughout the Russia-Ukraine war.
Prior to Tuesday’s pivotal meeting with Ukrainian representatives in Saudi Arabia, Rubio was asked if he expected that the Ukrainian delegation would “raise the resumption of military assistance” during the meeting. Reporters also asked Rubio what the United States was prepared to do with regard to military aid for Ukraine.
In response, Rubio said, “Sure, I imagine that they’ll raise that, and I’m sure that’ll be addressed. And hopefully, we’ll have a good meeting and we’ll have good news to announce on that front.”
The secretary of state added, “I can assure you this: We will not be providing military aid to the Russians.”
When Rubio was again pressed to answer whether the United States would resume military aid for Ukraine ahead of Tuesday’s meeting in Saudi Arabia, the secretary of state said, “Yeah, I mean, all of that came about because we felt that they were not committed to any sort of peace process or not interested in negotiations. If that changes, then obviously our posture can change.”

Following Tuesday’s meeting between U.S. and Ukrainian representatives in Saudi Arabia, President Donald Trump’s administration announced that Ukraine had accepted a 30-day ceasefire proposal and that the ceasefire proposal would soon be presented to Russia.
In Tuesday’s joint statement by the United States and Ukraine, the two governments addressed the issue of resuming U.S. aid for Ukraine, saying, “The United States will immediately lift the pause on intelligence sharing and resume security assistance to Ukraine.”
After peace negotiations concluded between the United States and Ukraine on Tuesday, Rubio told reporters that the ceasefire agreement included plans to discuss a way to “end” the conflict in Ukraine in a way that is “enduring and sustainable” and takes the interests, prosperity, and security of Ukraine into account.
While announcing the ceasefire agreement, Rubio expressed optimism that the Russian government would “say yes to peace” and would agree to the 30-day ceasefire proposal. “The ball is now in their court,” Rubio added.
