The Issue: President Trump’s efforts to broker peace between Russia and Ukraine.
The United States’ approach to brokering a peace settlement in the Russia-Ukraine war can best be described as bias-based diplomacy, with Russia the beneficiary and Ukraine the strategic victim (“Zel scoffs at Don’s Vlad view,” Dec. 30).
The policy’s inherent flaws, stemming from both naïveté and prejudice, have enabled Russian aggression to flourish in Ukraine.
By insisting that Ukraine accommodate Russia, President Trump has made his pressure campaign seem one-directional. He’s treating our ally as more of a nuisance than a strategic partner.

In spite of many efforts to find a peaceful resolution, this brutal war has been going on for years and continues to claim many lives.
Vladimir Putin continues to wage war as Russia launches new attacks on Ukraine, disregarding efforts aimed at achieving peace in the region.
I’m afraid this war may spark a wider regional conflict. The longer it goes on, the greater the risk to human civilization.
I’m hoping logic and reason will prevail in the new year, and the war will come to an end.

If Trump truly wants to end the Ukraine-Russia war, he must consider not inflicting more pain. He must choose to be a statesman and identify an economic package that will help both Ukraine and Russia recover economically.
Rebuilding relations between America and Russia would be sound and strategic US foreign policy.

The war in Ukraine will not end unless Trump and the Europeans use the most punitive sanctions possible to crush Russia’s economy.
Putin is a ruthless liar, who doesn’t want the war to end unless he gets everything he wants.
He also needs to pay a heavier price in terms of destroyed infrastructure, since he obviously doesn’t care how many of his own people he sacrifices on the battlefield.
Trump needs to drop the hammer on this evil dictator, or this will not end.

It seems Putin will continue this war until he either conquers all of Ukraine or is defeated. The only problem with the latter is that it may take World War III to get rid of Putin.
We may be heading in that direction anyway when you add the Chinese problem to the equation, unless we come up with some solid strategies to keep the peace.

The Issue: Gov. Hochul rejecting President Trump’s “no tax on tips” policy for state income taxes.
It’s interesting Gov. Hochul decided to decouple from the “no tax on tips” part of the Big Beautiful Bill but is going along with the part that increases the SALT deduction (“Only 8 states take tip from Don,” Dec. 27).
Who benefits more from this? Those who work for an hourly wage and hope for tips to supplement their income or those who earn large incomes and are able to afford the high taxes on their real estate? The answer is obvious.
Hochul has once again sold out the hourly working people.

Hochul refusing to implement the “no tax on tips” policy in New York is clearly a consequence of spending billions on illegal migrants. The state is starved for cash and simply can’t afford to give tax breaks to working people.
In the meantime, tip your servers and bartenders in cash. The less the Democratic Party’s involved in transactions, the better the money will be spent by the people who earned it.
