The Issue: President Trump’s military aid for Ukraine and 50-day peace deadline for Vladimir Putin.
Increasing weapons to Ukraine is not enough to stop Russia’s Vladimir Putin (“Demon Vlad’s defiance,” July 16).
Severe sanctions have to be imposed on the Russian economy to disable Putin’s ability to continue the war.

For a guy who once bragged about what a “genius” he is, President Trump is a pretty slow learner: He now says that he felt he had a deal with Putin about four times.
Somebody needs to teach this non-genius the simple truth: Fool me once, shame on you.
Fool me twice, shame on me.
No actual genius lets himself get fooled four times, then gives the fooler 50 more days to fool them again.

It’s time for President Trump to stop believing that Putin is someone he can ever make a deal with. Putin is a psychopath no different from Joseph Stalin or Adolf Hitler.
He has no regard for human life.
It’s time to unequivocally join with our NATO allies and end Putin’s unjust war, which is driven by his irrational urge to restore “Russian greatness.”
The United States must use all measures possible — both economic and military — to defeat the Russian tyrant.

It’s the ultimate snub to the world at large: Putin keeps on striking in the midst of President Trump threatening sanctions and tariffs and sending more munitions to Ukraine.
There is no rationality coming out of the Putin camp.
Nonetheless, we have to remain hopeful that the pressures exerted on Putin will ultimately coerce him to relent.
On the other side of the coin, his mindset won’t allow him to come away with a bruised ego — and this remains the limiting factor.
There is no clear end in sight to this war, and the senseless loss of lives on both sides will likely go on for many more months to come.

US NATO ambassador Matt Whitaker is right about President Trump’s game-changing decision to send billions of dollars’ worth of weapons to Ukraine and impose 100% “secondary tariffs” on countries that buy Russian oil (“Ukraine Game Changer,” Editorial, July 15).
Whitaker said the tariffs that would apply to India and China will “dramatically impact the Russian economy.”
If Trump’s actions convince Vladimir Putin to end his senseless war on Ukraine, the Nobel Peace Prize should rightfully belong to him.

The Issue: The new “Superman” movie reflecting liberals’ alienation from “the American way.”
Really: A woke Superman (“Man of Mush,” Daniel McCarthy, July 16)?
Is nothing sacred?
Do all our cultural influences — past and present — need to be put through the wringer of loony leftism?
Despite what happened this past Nov. 5, the left’s disease is still there.
Sadly, it’s now so embedded in our lives that half this country accepts all the nonsense, if not advocates for it.
No: The culture wars are not over and neither is the fight for the “American way.”
Unfortunately, the loony left is recruiting more zealots with each passing mindless generation.

I agree that the new “Superman” doesn’t endorse “the American way,” but what do you expect?
He is young.
As is the case with most young people, I expect him to evolve and become more mature.
Don’t bet against “the American way” coming into full bloom.
