POLITICS: Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen testifies against him: Letters

The Issue: Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg’s decision to have Trump’s former attorney Michael Cohen testify.

In a desperate attempt to throw anything against the wall and see what sticks, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has put Michael Cohen on the stand as his ace witness (“What do we gotta pay?”, May 14).

If I were unfortunate enough to be on the jury, I’d take anything this convicted felon says with a grain of salt. Cohen hit a wall in his life and is now trying to convince jurors that he is even remotely believable.

Hopefully, the judge will be the real fixer and dismiss this circus of a trial before it goes to the jury.

While Cohen was working as former President Donald Trump’s personal attorney and “fixer,” he once said he’d “take a bullet” for Trump.

Trump himself once bragged that he “could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody” and he “wouldn’t lose any voters.” I sure hope that Trump and Cohen don’t accidentally run into each other on 5th Avenue during a trial lunch break this week.

I am amused by how legal experts and attorneys are debating whether Cohen’s testimony will be good for the prosecution.

Truth be told, the purpose of the witness testimony and the entire trial is to just keep Trump off the campaign trail.

And even though the jury in this trial is predisposed to find him guilty, many people know that Trump would likely win if he were to appeal the verdict.

I can’t find a more accurate way to describe Cohen than that which was used by journalist Joseph Alsop to describe former White House Counsel John Dean during the Watergate scandal: a “bottom-dwelling slug.”

Had this case gone to an elected New York State Supreme Court judge, chances are he or she would’ve dismissed such a baseless political prosecution against Trump.

However, acting Supreme Court justices like Juan Merchan are political appointees subject to political manipulation. While Trump is charged with fraud, it’s Bragg and his political handlers who are committing it.

The Issue: Inappropriate behavior by Dubliners on a new virtual “portal” connecting New York with Ireland.

You can’t make up some of the crazy decisions made by out-of-touch people (“Yuck of the Irish,” May 13).

To place a portal in New York sending out dysfunction for the world to see and to, in turn, get insulted by Dubliners? Talk about stupid. What’s next? A portal from Times Square showing the slasher?
They should spend the money on something else.

Maureen Sharkey

Ireland is a country in crisis. We have a serious problem with homelessness and housing, a serious problem for the last decade.

I am utterly baffled and bewildered why my government thought it would be a good idea to spend money on a portal link to New York at a time when my country is hurting and struggling economically and socially. Was this supposed cultural exchange done to distract us from the blatant shortfall in housing, our crippled health sector, an overstretched police force and open gang warfare on the streets of Dublin?

Brendan Bourke

Dublin, Ireland

The disrespectful actions of a Dublin mob toward New York — and America — will not be forgotten. The Tourist Board of Ireland is likely in crisis mode right now.
