The Issue: President Trump controlling Venezuela’s oil sales following Nicolás Maduro’s capture.
You’re damn right, Nicolás Maduro’s capture is all about oil (“WH: It’s oil under control,” Jan. 8).
It’s about recouping the billions of dollars of American oil company assets and infrastructure stolen by Hugo Chávez and Maduro.
It’s also about driving down worldwide oil market prices — the same oil market that, when highly priced, allows Russia to finance its war against the people of Ukraine.

Venezuelans don’t need lectures from comfortable Americans who’ve never experienced tyranny. They know who destroyed their country, and are relieved he’s gone.
The claims that President Trump capturing Maduro was all about oil are bogus. The United States doesn’t need Venezuelan oil. If anything, a rebuilt Venezuelan oil industry will create competition for American producers.

Trump promised us he’d focus on America’s domestic problems and not engage in warmongering.
With our debt at $39 trillion, illegally attacking sovereign nations will not solve our financial crisis, no matter how much oil Venezuela has.
Trump has demonstrated that America doesn’t respect international law. We are embarking on a dangerous era in global relations that may lead to World War III, and we should all be deeply concerned.

If I know anything about Trump, he’s already worked out a lucrative oil deal with Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado. The deal will likely also provide security guarantees to help stabilize the country against Chinese, Iranian and Russian influences. This would be a monumental economic and geopolitical win for America.

Trump capturing Maduro had everything to do with taking control of Venezuela’s oil industry.
We invaded their country, arrested Maduro — even though Trump recently pardoned another “narco-president,” Juan Orlando Hernandez — and effectively took control of Venezuelan oil for our profit. Everything else you hear from Trump is just a coverup.

It’s clear drug imports and human rights were just excuses to justify Trump’s invasion of Venezuela. Oil appears to have been his real motive. He’s nothing less than a consummate liar.
Trump’s concern for Venezuelan citizens also turns out to be a blatant lie. After all, he is supporting the transfer to Maduro’s right-hand woman, Delcy Rodríguez.

Trump and his administration have made many contradictory statements regarding Maduro’s capture. First, it was a law-enforcement operation and not regime change.
Then, it seemingly was regime change. Then, it was about combating drugs, except Trump recently pardoned another ex-head of state from Honduras who was convicted of aiding a drug-smuggling operation.
Now the United States is to control and sell Venezuelan oil — perhaps to the benefit of Trump and his oil company donors?
What exactly is going on, and why?

If you believe Trump’s capture of Nicolás Maduro is all about Venezuelan oil, you’d be right.
Trump’s order to kidnap and remove Maduro from power was intended to change the regime there and place opposition candidate Machado, in control eventually.
In return for power, Machado will open the flood gates to American oil companies.

Democrats allege that Maduro’s capture was not about drugs, but about oil. They forget that we’re standing on more than we need right under our feet, but Democratic governors won’t allow fracking in their states.
Moreover, Dems claim Trump’s actions were unconstitutional but forget that President Barack Obama intervened in Libya with no notice to Congress. Their disdain for Trump does not allow for any objective evaluation of his actions.
