Turkish un-delight
Fat chance of President Trump speaking out against Turkish President Recep Erdogan over the arrest of his main political opponent (“Call Out Erdo’s Outrages,” Editorial, March 25).
Let’s not forget that during Trump’s first term, Erdogan, on a state visit to Washington, looked on approvingly as his thuggish bodyguards assaulted and injured American citizens peacefully protesting his oppressive policies in Turkey.
Later, Erdogan ordered his military and Islamic militias to attack our Kurdish allies in Syria. Trump’s response? He withdrew US military support from the Kurds, dismissing their plight. Trump has always admired “strong men” like Erdogan who undermine democracy in their nations.

Bruce Willis: icon
The Page Six article on Emma Heming reflecting on the “monumental highs and devastating lows” of Bruce Willis’ dementia diagnosis highlights how their tragedy has given them a voice for others (“Love dies hard!” March 21).
Heming has become a voice for caregivers, while Willis, for the last 40 years, has been a symbol of hope for people who stutter. He’s spoken openly about his struggles with stuttering and how acting and speech therapy helped him achieve fluency. It’s tragically ironic that he battled severe speech difficulties early in life and now faces them again due to aphasia and dementia.

Get over sports
President Trump is making an enormous, costly spectacle over a tiny issue (“Don to Maine gov: Must say sorry!” March 23).
There are 332 million people in this country, and only 0.5% are trans. Yet, Trump wants to punish the universities of Maine because Gov. Janet Mills refuses to apologize for supporting trans rights. What kind of country are we? The foundation of our government is debate and compromise. We are strongest when we respect other viewpoints.
An executive order has power, but it can be challenged by Congress or the courts. So far, rulings have gone both ways, and Congress has avoided the issue. Until the issue of trans athletes is settled, it’s open for discussion — that’s democracy. Mills owes Trump no apology.

Rikers madness
Closing Rikers Island and replacing it with four borough-based jails makes no sense (“Progressives’ Rikers Denial,” Editorial, March 24).
Except to progressive ideologues and opportunistic developers, perhaps, who see potential in its 400 waterfront acres near LaGuardia Airport. Especially considering that casino gambling is on the horizon. This is a bad idea, but the city’s radical agenda is nothing new.

Green war & peace
Greenpeace being ordered to pay $667 million for its role in the protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline is one more step in the organization’s decline (“Far-left orgs spoil rallies for a fight,” James B. Meigs, March 25).
I was a longtime donor back when its mission was to “Save the Whales” and end nuclear bomb testing in the South Pacific. But, its mission quickly morphed into global warming, climate activism and wokeness.
The last straw for me was when its newsletter featured an employee stating that “the environmental movement has for too long been headed by white men.” As if the whales cared about the race of their saviors.
