On Friday evening, President Donald Trump addressed U.S. Steel workers, assuring them that the well-known steel manufacturer would continue as an “American company.” This statement followed his recent disclosure of a “planned partnership” involving Japan’s Nippon Steel Corporation and U.S. Steel Corporation.
During his remarks in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Trump remarked that “for generations” U.S. Steel symbolized “greatness.” He expressed that the company would “again be synonymous with greatness.”
Trump declared, “We’re here today to celebrate a blockbuster agreement that will ensure this storied American company STAYS an American company — you’re going to stay an American company, you know that right? We’re going to have a great partner. And, I have to tell you, Japan has been a tremendous friend of mine during my years as president — and then we had a little hiatus, we had a rigged election.”
He went on to add: “It will keep its headquarters in the great city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where it belongs. For generations, the name, United States Steel was synonymous with greatness, and now it will again be synonymous with greatness. The best, and strongest steel on earth will forever be made in America and made in Pennsylvania.”
Trump’s announcement came a week after he posted on Truth Social that U.S. Steel would remain headquartered in Pittsburgh.
In that post, Trump said the collaboration between Nippon Steel and U.S. Steel would “create at least 70,000 jobs, and add $14 Billion Dollars to the U.S. Economy.”
“I am proud to announce that, after much consideration and negotiation, US Steel will REMAIN in America, and keep its Headquarters in the Great City of Pittsburgh,” Trump stated in his post. “For many years, the name, ‘United States Steel’ was synonymous with Greatness, and now, it will be again. This will be a planned partnership between United States Steel and Nippon Steel, which will create at least 70,000 jobs, and add $14 Billion Dollars to the U.S. Economy.”
As previously covered by Breitbart News, former President Joe Biden in January announced the use of the Defense Production Act of 1950 to block Nippon Steel from acquiring U.S. Steel.
Biden’s declaration followed the 2023 announcement by Nippon Steel and U.S. Steel executives that the American company, which “played a critical role in helping the Allies defeat Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany in World War II,” had been sold to Nippon Steel as part of a “nearly $15 billion deal”:
Early on Monday, executives with U.S. Steel and Nippon Steel Corporation announced the nearly $15 billion deal, which vows to uphold the U.S. Steelworkers’ (USW) labor contract and will be completed mid-2024, though shareholders for U.S. Steel must still give their stamp of approval.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette noted that, while speaking at the rally, Trump said steel tariffs will be raised and emphasized these actions would “create a fairer trading environment between” the U.S. and other nations.
