Border czar Tom Homan ignited a diplomatic firestorm by declaring that the U.K. is no longer a “friend of this country.”
Knewz.com has learned that his comment followed reports that Britain suspended a key intelligence channel over concerns about U.S. airstrikes on suspected drug-trafficking boats in the Caribbean.
UK pushback over Caribbean strikes
The Donald Trump administration has defended recent strikes on boats labeled as narcotics-smuggling vessels in the Caribbean, insisting they are part of a broader effort to target “foreign terrorist groups.”
According to reports, the operations have resulted in more than 80 deaths.
Critics argue the administration has not provided adequate evidence that the boats carried cartel operatives, noting reports that some vessels were stationary or turning around when attacked.
According to CNN, the U.K. deemed the strikes “illegal” and halted intelligence sharing to avoid being “complicit.”
Homan distanced Washington from London

When asked about the intelligence freeze, Homan distanced Washington from London.
“I don’t think the U.K. is a friend of this country, a friend of the president,” he said, adding that questions about intelligence cooperation are “out of my lane.”
His remarks came despite decades of coordination in the Caribbean, where British intelligence has long supported the U.S. Coast Guard.
Growing legal and moral disputes

Legal experts have challenged the Trump administration’s justification for using lethal force, noting that labeling a group as a foreign terrorist organization “does not automatically authorize the use of lethal force.”
Critics also say the U.S. is bypassing standard procedures like boarding, arresting and seizing drugs by opting for deadly strikes instead.
Former Joe Biden adviser Andrew Bates responded to Homan’s statement, saying, “Instead of damaging our national security and attacking our closest ally, Homan should listen to the American Catholic bishops who this week condemned the administration’s threats against the sanctity of houses of worship and the special nature of hospitals and schools.”
International partners signal wider concerns

The rift has widened beyond the U.K. Canada has told Washington it does not want its intelligence used to select lethal maritime targets, though it has not suspended cooperation.
CNN reporters Pamela Brown and Wolf Blitzer noted they could not recall another instance of Britain halting intelligence sharing over concerns the U.S. was violating international law.
The growing resistance suggests mounting pressure on the Trump administration to defend the legality of its Caribbean operations.
