The hard left of the Democratic Party is trying to force Gov. Hochul to fire Mayor Adams because it thinks he might help the Trump administration remove illegal migrant criminals who are menacing New Yorkers.
How dare he!
Forget that Adams is New York’s democratically elected mayor.
Forget that most New Yorkers want illegal alien gangbangers out of our city.
The self-described party of “democracy” wants, yet again, to kill democracy to save it.
Just the mere fact that Adams sat on the curvy couch of “Fox & Friends” with border czar Tom Homan last week sent his Trump-deranged fellow Democrats into a tizzy.
They’re apoplectic that he’s agreed to allow ICE to reopen its office on Rikers Island that was closed in 2015 by his despised predecessor, Bill de Blasio.
“What they don’t like [is] he wants to cooperate with the president of the United States, Donald Trump,” City Council Member Robert Holden told Fox News.
“That’s what the Democrats don’t like — and I’m a Democrat. But I see it plain as day here. When Tom Homan appeared with Mayor Adams on ‘Fox & Friends,’ it hit the fan.”
Adams’ factional detractors are pretending their coordinated campaign to oust the mayor is because they are sticklers for the law (hah!) rather than maneuvering to seize City Hall.
They claim Adams’ cooperation with ICE is a “quid pro quo” in return for having the Trump DOJ kill the mayor’s corruption indictment.
Adams denies it.
Trump denies it.
Acting Deputy AG Emil Bove denies it.
Wants cooperation
Bove told Manhattan federal Judge Dale Ho Wednesday the DOJ wants the case dropped simply because it hinders Adams’ cooperation with Trump’s crackdown on illegal migrant criminals.
Fair enough.
The Trump administration is “ending weaponized government, stopping the invasion of criminal illegal aliens, and eliminating drug cartels and transnational gangs from our homeland,” he said after the hearing.
With all the organized crime, disorder and terrorism threats in this city, you’d think the fabled Southern District of New York would have better things to do than investigate Adams for alleged paltry campaign-finance violations before he was mayor and decade-old Turkish Airlines upgrades.
Where was the fearless “Sovereign District” on Biden corruption that occurred in its territory?
Where was it when Hunter Biden’s business partner Devon Archer was indicted on fraud charges, but Hunter was not even called as a witness?
Why did the SDNY spy on Rudy Giuliani when he was Trump’s lawyer, raid him, seize his devices, and then three years later admit they had found nothing?
Why did the SDNY indict Biden corruption whistleblower Gal Luft just before Republicans took control of the House, when he would have testified to the Biden impeachment committee?
Where was the SDNY when de Blasio’s wife squandered $1 billion of taxpayers’ money on the homeless program ThriveNYC while homelessness soared?
SDNY was too busy probing Adams over allegations that he delivered a quid pro quo for $123,000 in travel perks in the form of a temporary waiver of a fire-inspection requirement on a new Turkish consulate near the UN so it could open in time for the Turkish president to visit in September 2021.
Big deal.
Adams at the time was still Brooklyn borough president and the Democratic mayoral nominee.
The fire inspection was completed after the Turkish prez left.
And it’s not as if Adams hadn’t already spoken against the flood of illegal migrants into New York before Trump came along.
That’s what got the mayor into trouble with the Biden administration in the first place.
While Bove’s moves have been needlessly messy, there’s no doubt that the Adams indictment last fall had the whiff of good old New York-style weaponization of the justice system, a scourge that Trump himself knows all too well.
“I know what it’s like to be persecuted by the DOJ for speaking out against open borders,” Trump said at the Catholic Al Smith dinner a month after Adams was indicted last September.
“We were persecuted, Eric. I was persecuted, and so are you.”
Adams was hardly a full-throated opponent of illegal migration — he sent besuited concierges with gift bags to the Port Authority to greet illegals off buses.
But he at least tried to get the Biden administration to cough up the $7 billion-plus cost.
“DC has abandoned us,” he lamented in November 2022, one of the few Democrats who ever said a word about the 10-15 million illegal migrants who flooded into the country under Joe Biden.
Sure enough, he was soon whacked with criminal charges.
Yes, Adams bent over double to ingratiate himself with Trump during the presidential campaign in the hope of a pardon — which he didn’t get — but he has not exactly turned into a border hawk.
He is just doing what New Yorkers want by helping Homan remove the worst criminal aliens, rapists, killers, thieves, thugs and gang members from the city.
No mayor in history has ever been fired in New York, so for Hochul even to entertain the idea shows how weak and cowardly she is.
And why did she meet with the unelected race baiter Al Sharpton this week, other than as cover for her desire to fire a black mayor.
The Democratic primary is only four months away.
Hochul should let the voters decide Adams’ fate.
Empowering the crazies
The only upshot of her craven behavior is to empower the Dems’ suicidal “progressive” faction that is responsible for all that ails this city, with their “sanctuary city” protections, defunding of the NYPD, soft-on-crime bail reform, decriminalization and lax enforcement of quality-of-life crimes, excessive taxation, over-regulation and so on, that have decimated the city’s tax base and quality of life.
You can see them all circling like vultures over a wounded Adams.
The speaker of the City Council, Adrienne Adams (no relation), is suspiciously vocal in her demands that the mayor resign, leading anyone with half a brain to believe she has designs on the top job herself.
Not that she has a hope, but her entry into the mayoral race could split the moderate vote and spike polling front-runner Andrew Cuomo’s chances by co-opting black voters and outer-borough moderates.
The chaos of ranked-choice voting might then allow far-left Comptroller Brad Lander, de Blasio 2.0, to win from behind, despite being stuck with an approval rating in polls of 6-10%.
These are the sort of Machiavellian machinations that deliver New Yorkers exactly what they do not want.
And even if Cuomo were to win — perish the thought — if Hochul buckles now, he will be a lame duck from Day One, beholden to the newly powerful vandals of the far left.
