A recent discovery was made of a 1,750 year old text that was ‘under’ a text they already had of the Bible. It seems the scholars researching these parchments found by using uv light that there were words written that had been erased and written over in a Biblical text.
And using the uv light they have found that it has more to say about Mathew12 of the Bible. While interpreting this Syriac writing they discovered that it does not change the meaning of Mt.12 at all. But, in fact what it says agrees completely with the teaching Jesus gave concerning the tree and its fruit in Mt.12 that was written over it.
But, as amazing is the find of such writing is, the bigger issue this find speaks of, and the really interesting part that I want to address here is what these scholars said about their find. And that is their belief that a find like this and others shows how the scriptures have an “evolving nature” about them.
Is this what you believe? Do you believe as these that there an evolving nature to the scriptures? Well I’m here to tell you that the Bible has many things to say about the scriptures. But, that they have an evolving nature is not one of them.
Paul said in 2Tim.3 that “16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”
Peter wrote in his first epistle saying, “23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
24 For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:
25 But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.”
Peter’s teaching about the scriptures was taken from Isaiah who wrote in chapter40 saying, “6 The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field:
7 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the Lord bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass.
8 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.”
And Jesus in John5 when speaking to the Pharisees who thought they would find eternal life in the old covenant said, “37 And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.
38 And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.
39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.”
Here Jesus said the scriptures testify of me. The very scriptures that these scholars said have an evolving nature to them. But, if that was true could they speak of Jesus? Not according to the scriptures themselves.
Because what we find in them about God is that He is unchanging. He does not evolve with the times as these scholars said the scriptures do. Psalms55:19 says speaking of God “with whom there is no change”. Mal.3:6 tells us ““For I, the Lord, do not change”. James1:17 says, “Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.“ And Heb.13:8 tells us “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today, and forever.”
So we see from these and many more scriptures that God who gave them and inspired those who wrote them does not change. He does not evolve with the times or in any other way.
Another thing we can see because of this is that God Himself has always been unchanging. His is not a nature that evolves over time. Refuting the claim Roman Catholics, Mormons and others make that God began as a man who has over time evolved into a God.
Roman Catholics teaching in their catechism saying, “God became a man so that men might become Gods.” And Mormons saying, “As man is God once was. And as God is man may become.”
No, God does not change and neither does God’s word. Scripture has no evolving nature to it. Because scripture comes from the God who “changeth not”. Thank God He changeth not. Otherwise how could we trust Him?
But, because He changeth not we can and do trust in Him. And since like Him His scriptures are never changing or evolving we can also trust in His word. Trust that as we find God in His word as we are reproved by the Holy Spirit we find the giver of eternal life who is Jesus.
An eternal life Jesus said in the unchanging scriptures that comes by being born again. By having a spirit created in us that Jesus said was never there before. A spirit that joins us to God as His children. And as children heirs to His kingdom.
If you will trust God you will have a spirit created in you too. No longer being only flesh and blood. And because of that you will be able to hear and understand the things of the Spirit of God. Just as Jesus said in John3:1-8. And Paul says in Rom.2:14 and 8:14.
If you will confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus. And believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead. You shall be saved. Saved from natural to spiritual now, and from mortality to immortality at the resurrection.
