Suburban New Jersey voters face a clear choice in next month’s special election to replace now-Gov. Mikie Sherrill in the House: Unless they want a radical, antisemitic socialist representing them in Washington, they need to cast their ballots for sensible centrist Joe Hathaway, whom The Post strongly endorses today.
NJ-11 covers parts of Morris, Essex and Passaic counties; though liberal voters predominate, no one would call it a hard-left district.
Yet Democrats nominated hard leftist Analilia Mejia to oppose the GOP’s Hathaway, the mayor of Randolph.
Yes, Mejia’s now trying to rebrand herself as a mere “soccer mom” with traditional values — but her record all the way through winning the primary is openly extreme.
Indeed, she urged voters to choose her from the large pack because normal Democrats aren’t good enough: “Any old blue just won’t do,” she claimed.
She served as national political director for socialist Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign and now has his backing, along with that of hard-core “progressives” such as Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Delia Ramirez and Pramila Jayapal — as well as Jersey firebrand Rep. LaMonica McIver.
Mejia also headed the New Jersey Working Families Party, a proud lefty outfit that has called for defunding the police and other extremist measures.
Mejia herself wants to strip cops of qualified immunity, meaning criminals can sue them personally, rather than the government that employs them: That’s a recipe for police doing the least possible to stop crimes.
She calls for abolishing ICE and has promoted training on “resistance” to it.
Like Mayor Zohran Mamdani, she wants to socialize everything — health care, community college, child care and more.
She’s a shoo-in to join The Squad if she wins; other top goals include “taxing the rich” and packing the Supreme Court.
And Mejia isn’t shy about her hatred not just for Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu but for Zionist “ideology” and Israel generally.
She insists the Jewish state commits “genocide” (the only one of the 11 Democrats in the primary to be so extreme) and opposes giving it even “a penny” of US aid.
Asked if Jews “have the right to self-determination in their ancestral homeland,” Mejia was one of just two Democrats to say no.
Which means sane Democrats and independents should flock to Hathaway — a moderate Republican who really does have mainstream values.
He believes ICE agents should get better training but joins the vast majority of Americans in believing they should get violent illegal-immigrant criminals off the streets.
He’s pro-choice but sees no cause to waste time in Congress on an issue that’s totally deadlocked at the national level.
As a small-town mayor, he’s close to his community and knows what people want.
He’d push to lower utility bills by supporting an “all-of-the above energy strategy”; hopes to cut health-care costs and back law enforcement, invest in mental-health treatment and “stand firm” with US allies, including Israel.
“If you want to represent this district, you should have the moral clarity to stand with our Jewish neighbors and with Israel,” he says.
Mejia is drastically out of step with the district; far more residents share Hathaway’s reasonable moderation.
NJ-11 voters looking for a pragmatic centrist who cares about them and reflects their values need to vote for Joe Hathaway on April 16, or in the early voting that starts April 6.
