POLITICS: The City Council’s power grab would make NYC government more dysfunctional

The City Council is moving ahead with its power grab over top mayoral appointments, demanding an unprecedented power of approval over chiefs of the NYPD, FDNY and other key agencies.

Speaker Adrienne Adams (D-Queens) actually says the city should operate more like the federal government, where the Senate must OK every Cabinet member and their top assistants.

That’s nuts: It now takes every new president months just to fill out the Cabinet, and a year or more to fully staff the new administration.

It’s one big reason why Washington’s grown so dysfunctional; why on God’s green earth should the city go down that road?

Mayor Bill de Blasio foolishly handed the council the right to veto the city’s top lawyer, the Law Department chief, and now the council is blocking Randy Mastro for the job simply because he served as a (great!) deputy mayor under Rudy Giuliani.

Mayors won the sole power to appoint agency heads and commissioners 140 years ago, and for good reason: Then-Gov. Grover Cleveland noted, “The plea should never be heard that a bad nomination had been made because it was the only one that could secure confirmation.”

Why should a mayor who’s elected citywide accede to the parochial and ideological interests of council members? He (or she, someday) will take the sole heat for any appointees who fail.

The Adams administration points out that the City Charter already grants the council “significant checks on the mayor’s power, including budget, land use and oversight.”

The council has used those limited powers to add billions in excessive spending, to hamstring the NYPD and to spring thugs from Rikers Island, among other abuses.

New Yorkers need their mayor and his top aides focused on doing their jobs, not jumping through arbitrary hoops to please councilmembers with too much time on their hands.

Fact is, city government would run a lot more smoothly if the council’s power were drastically decreased.
