POLITICS: Team Trump’s strategy for getting Europeans to step up is working

Guess what? The Trump administration’s much-criticized strategy to get Western Europe to do more to defend itself is working.

Yes, Europe’s leaders were miffed that President Trump had a one-on-one call with Russian President Vladimir Putin last week apparently without consulting them.

And that he sent Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security adviser Mike Waltz and Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff to to Saudi Arabia to discuss a possible deal to end the Ukraine war with their Russian counterparts — while not inviting them.

Last week, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told NATO members in Brussels, “Leaders of our European allies should take primary responsibility for defense of the continent.”

A few days later, Vice President JD Vance followed up at the Munich Security Conference by reaffirming that “we want to make sure that NATO is actually built for the future, and we think a big part of that is ensuring that NATO does a little bit more burden sharing in Europe.”

All this sent the legacy media into hysterics:

The New York Times declared “Trump Team Leaves Behind an Alliance in Crisis.”

CNN claimed the Trump administration has “shattered Western unity on the conflict and cast doubt on how far the US would go to defend Europe, signaling a stunning shift toward Putin and away from America’s traditional allies.”

While Trump and his team are walking a tightrope on which much can go wrong, the truth is that Europe’s leaders have been only too happy, for too long, to let the United States lead the way on protecting Ukraine and the continent at large.

And on picking up a disproportionate share of the bills for all that.

So the White House is sending a stern message: Step up, because the United States isn’t going to be your Sugar Daddy forever.

Show some initiative, on Ukraine. On dealing with Russia. On putting your own troops and resources on the line.

Come up with a plan — for Ukraine, and longer-term, for the continent that has Europe as the primary party responsible for its security.

The result? Lots of grumbling, but on Monday panicked European leaders held an emergency meeting in Paris to discuss the possibility of sending US peacekeeping troops to aid Kyiv.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is, for the first time, even open to putting peacekeepers in Ukraine.

That’s the best path forward: If Russia is going to be kept in check long-term, NATO allies need to start doing their share.

Trump’s approach may be delivering a bit of tough love, but in the long-run, it’ll mean stronger European ties to America.

And a stronger Europe.
