If nothing else, President Trump’s new national security strategy tells some hard truths about our European friends: They are indeed facing “civilizational erasure.”
It’s not just that Western Europe’s economies have barely grown these last 20 years, nor that birth rates are far below replacement while immigration is transforming politics and culture; it’s also that the continent’s elites are focused not on fixing any of this, but on suppressing dissent about the policies that are destroying these nations.
“We want Europe to remain European, to regain its civilizational self-confidence, and to abandon its failed focus on regulatory suffocation,” the document implores.
That regulation has kept the European Union from enjoying any high-tech-centered economic growth, while also crippling traditional manufacturing and so on with lunatic “net zero” policies that have sent energy costs soaring even as they leave Europe dependent on Russian fuel exports that fund the Moscow war machine that EU leaders rightly fear.
Instead of abandoning their madness, European governments opt for “anti-democratic restrictions on core liberties,” especially free speech: They basically insist on arresting every voice that calls out, “The emperor has no clothes.”
The Trump strategy statement may have its flaws, but it faces Europe’s central crisis in a way neither the continent’s leaders nor most American elites dare to admit. We hope the wake-up call works, and our friends turn away from national suicide.
