Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell of California dropped a head-turning proposal on CNN Thursday, urging his party to prioritize impeaching the tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, The Daily Caller reports.
On the broadcast with host Kacie Hunt, Swalwell, who is also running for governor of California, criticized Trump’s trade policies, including a recent 10% tariff on several European countries announced Saturday over their opposition to his bid to purchase Greenland from Denmark.
He also targeted the administration’s broader conduct and pledged tough measures against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel if elected.
Swalwell’s Bold Tariff Impeachment Push
The issue has sparked debate over whether policy decisions like tariffs can even be grounds for impeachment, with many questioning the practicality of Swalwell’s stance.
Hunt pressed Swalwell on what specific actions by Trump he deemed impeachable, to which he doubled down on his tariff critique.
“Well, let me just say this. I think we should impeach the tariffs,” Swalwell told Hunt, framing it as a top priority for Democrats if they regain control.

Swalwell’s tariff fixation seems to hinge on a broader frustration with Trump’s economic record, alleging the president failed to deliver on affordability promises.
While Trump’s trade policies have been a lightning rod for debate, targeting tariffs as an impeachment issue feels like a stretch, especially when policy disagreements aren’t traditionally grounds for such action.

Broader Attacks on Trump’s Administration
Swalwell didn’t stop at tariffs or ICE, also suggesting Democrats use subpoena power to haul in administration figures he accuses of misconduct.
“What I’m saying is when we have the power of subpoena and we have oversight ability, we have to bring in everybody in this administration who has led the terrorizing of immigrants,” Swalwell said on CNN, further alleging Trump personally profited over $1 billion in his first year.
Such claims demand hard evidence, not just fiery rhetoric, and risk turning legitimate oversight into a partisan witch hunt if not grounded in specific, provable wrongdoing.
