Former Vice President Kamala Harrisβs upcoming book is full of excuses for her 2024 electoral loss.
Her book, β107 Days,β reveals what happened in the hours leading up to her highly anticipated debate with President Donald Trump, and it shows a very different relationship with former President Joe Biden than the media would have had you believe.
According toΒ The Guardian, Harris was in her Pennsylvania hotel room preparing to take on Trump when she received a phone call from Biden that left her βangry and disappointed.β Bidenβs phone call started with the standard sentiments, such as wishing her well, then shifted in tone when he reportedly asked her if she planned to visit Philadelphia again before the election. This prompted Harris to wonder why he would ask such a bizarrely timed question.
βMy brother called. Heβs been talking to a group of real power brokers in Philly,β Biden reportedly said, offering Harris several names, though she didnβt know any of them.
βThen he got to his point,β Harris wrote. βHis brother had told him that those guys were not going to support me because Iβd been saying bad things about him. He wasnβt inclined to believe it, he claimed, but he thought I should know in case my team had been encouraging me to put daylight between the two of us.β
He then went on to sugarcoat his own disastrous debate with Trump, which Harris admits she was βbarely listeningβ to.
βJoe then rattled on about his own former debate performances. βI beat him the other time; I wasnβt feeling well in that last one.β He continued to insist that his debate performance hadnβt hurt him much with the electorate. I was barely listening,β she wrote.
Ultimately, she says the call threw her off and left her confused about the timing.
βI just couldnβt understand why he would call me, right now, and make it all about himself. Distracting me with worry about hostile power-brokers in the biggest city of the most important state,β she vented, adding that her husband, Doug Emhoff, Β βcould see how angry and disappointed I was. βLet it go,β he said. He knew I had to redirect my focus. βDonβt worry about him. Youβre dealing with Trump. Let it go.ββ
Despite the obvious attempts to paint a picture of an inseparable president and vice president, Harrisβs book makes it clear that there was more daylight between the pair than the public was allowed to see.
βJoe struggled to talk about reproductive rights in a way that met the gravity of the moment,β she said of the then-presidentβs response to the overturn ofΒ Roe v. Wade in 2022.
More fromΒ The Guardian:
There was an awkward meeting on 4 July, when Biden was facing growing calls to step aside after his feeble debate performance. Harris hugged him and notes that βhe felt so frailβ, while Emhoff was led away to see the first lady at the time, Jill Biden.
Harris reports: βShe seemed tense, even angry. βWhatβs going on?β she demanded. βAre you supporting us?β Of course, Doug said. Of course we are supporting you. βOK. Thatβs really important. We need to know that.β
βWhen I joined him,β Harris continues, βDoug was wearing a grim expression. Doug runs cool. Heβs slow to anger. But I could tell something had gotten to him.
βLater, he unloaded. βThey hide you away for four years, give you impossible, shit jobs, donβt correct the record when those tasks are mischaracterised, never fight back when youβre attacked, never praise your accomplishments, and now, finally, they want you out there on that balcony, standing right beside them. Now, finally, they know you are an asset, and they need you to reassure the American people.
βAnd still, they have to ask if weβre loyal?β
