Salvaging the fashion cycle
Academy Awards time’s coming, so fashion stylist Benjamin Holtrop told me where some glamorous shmattas come from: “Fittings can take two hours. I start two weeks before an event, see how they feel, what they want to wear. Often they can keep it afterward, but mostly it goes right back to the designer.
“Once in the beginning an actress pulled me aside and said, ‘You need advice.’ She required specific underwear which I hadn’t thought to provide.
“I now use this app called Mercari. It’s Japanese with lots of vintage. I also go to local thrift shops, Goodwill, other secondhand places.
“Today’s fashion industry now moves so much faster, so it has to stand out on Instagram or TikTok. Because of social media I have to thrift a lot. I grew up on a farm and we always thrifted our clothing so that’s now what I do for award events.”
Means on hotshot awards shows where boobs and butts are bared, after the borrowed beads go back, most behinds are dressed alike.

Now, stuff for the ladies. Sergio Soldano, who dressed Liz, Gina, Raquel and most of the Florence phonebook, is schlepping here. His debut is Feb. 11 at Printemps boutique on Wall Street. Runway is 5 to 7 p.m.
