Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) unleashed a profanity-laced response when questioned about her Democratic colleagues’ controversial trips to El Salvador.

The confrontation occurred on Capitol Hill when Daily Caller News Foundation reporter Myles Morrell approached the Minnesota Democrat with a straightforward question about whether more Democratic lawmakers should travel to El Salvador to advocate for Rodrigo Garcia, a case that has divided party members.

Omar’s immediate response was blunt and aggressive.

“I think you should f*** off,” she told the reporter without hesitation, refusing to engage with the substance of the question.

When Morrell sought clarification, seemingly surprised by the hostile reaction to what appeared to be a routine policy question, Omar doubled down on her profane dismissal.

“I think you should f*ck off!” she repeated, leaving no doubt about her unwillingness to discuss the matter.

The heated exchange comes at a particularly sensitive time for Democrats, who face mounting scrutiny over their handling of the Kilmar Abrego Garcia case, which has evolved from what was initially presented as a clear-cut immigration rights issue into a politically complicated situation with potential electoral repercussions.

In recent months, several Democratic lawmakers have made high-profile trips to El Salvador specifically to advocate for Garcia’s return to the United States, positioning these journeys as humanitarian missions while critics have characterized them as political stunts designed to appeal to progressive immigration activists.

Garcia, a Salvadoran national who had been living in Maryland with his American citizen wife and children, was deported in March during an operation targeting alleged gang members, despite a 2019 immigration judge’s ruling that had granted him protection from removal.

Resist the Mainstream previously reported that Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) spearheaded these advocacy efforts, personally traveling to El Salvador to pressure authorities into moving Garcia out of CECOT prison; a facility known for its harsh conditions and controversial detention practices under President Nayib Bukele’s administration.

Following Van Hollen’s lead, Reps. Maxwell Frost (D-FL), Robert Garcia (D-CA), and Maxine Dexter (D-OR) also traveled to El Salvador, though they were ultimately denied access to Garcia himself.

The Democratic narrative around the case began to falter after revelations emerged that Garcia’s wife had previously filed a protective order.

While this was later clarified to have stemmed from an earlier abusive relationship not involving Garcia, the political damage had already been done, providing ammunition to critics who questioned Democrats’ judgment in championing this particular case.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is now quietly encouraging Democratic colleagues to step back from these high-profile trips while avoiding public statements on the matter, according to sources speaking to The Bulwark.

“They want to let the El Salvador stuff slow down,” revealed one senior staffer familiar with the situation, suggesting a strategic retreat from what was once viewed as a winning issue for Democrats on immigration policy and human rights.

The case has also exposed fault lines within the Democratic coalition, with progressives pushing for continued advocacy while moderates worry about potential political backlash in districts where immigration remains a contentious issue with voters concerned about border security.
