Charlie Kirk’s assassination at Utah Valley University has prompted an unusual warning from the Pentagon about online behavior by both service members and civilian employees.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and other top military leaders said they are monitoring social media activity and will punish personnel who celebrate or ridicule Kirk’s killing, as The Hill reports.

Kirk, the 31-year-old co-founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot in the neck on Wednesday while speaking at the Utah Valley University campus. Authorities identified the suspected gunman as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson of Utah, who was taken into custody shortly after the attack.

Defense leaders address concerns

In the aftermath of the shooting, Hegseth cautioned both military and civilian workers not to make comments online that glorify or mock the death of Kirk. He made clear the Pentagon considers such behavior unacceptable and damaging to public trust.

“We are tracking all these very closely — and will address, immediately. Completely unacceptable,” Hegseth said in a statement directed at both service members and Department of War employees.

Chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell reinforced the warning, stressing that inappropriate commentary about the assassination of a fellow American will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Parnell said the Department of War has a “zero tolerance” stance on celebratory or mocking behavior linked to political violence.

Navy secretary issues warning

Navy Secretary John Phelan also sent a message to sailors, Marines, and Department of the Navy civilians, expressing concern over posts that appeared to mock the killing. He underscored the seriousness of the issue, pointing to the impact it could have on the reputation of the military services.

“I am aware of posts displaying contempt toward a fellow American who was assassinated,” Phelan wrote. “I want to be very clear: any uniformed or civilian employee of the Department of the Navy who acts in a manner that brings discredit upon the Department, the [U.S. Navy] or the [Marine Corps] will be dealt with swiftly and decisively.”

His remarks reflected a broader effort across the Pentagon to curb responses that leaders see as harmful to the institution and contrary to military values.

Coast Guard launches probe

The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed that it was aware of similar social media activity among its ranks related to the assassination. The service said it is working with the Department of Homeland Security to identify and investigate those responsible for inappropriate online behavior.

“That social media activity is contrary to our core values,” the Coast Guard stated. “With the support of DHS, we are actively investigating this activity and will take appropriate action to hold the individual accountable.”

The statement added that leaders recognize the harm such conduct can cause and remain committed to ensuring personnel reflect the trust and responsibility placed in them by the American people.
