David Allen Funston is one of the worst criminals that you could imagine. In the late 90s, in California, David would drive around suburban neighborhoods looking for children aged 3 to 7. He would then use things like candy, toys, as well as little gifts to lure the kid into his car. Once inside, he would kidnap them, molest them, beat them, and rape them. Thankfully, he didn’t kill any of the kids — but that’s pretty much the only silver lining.
Due to the serious nature of his crimes, David was convicted and thrown into prison to serve out 3 life sentences. Thus far, he’s been sitting in prison for 27 years.
However, the California Parole Board decided that 27 years was enough — and as such, they granted him early release under California’s Elderly Parole Program, which allows inmates who are over the age of 50 (who’ve served at least 20 years or more) to be be let out early.
The thinking — is that he is no longer a danger to society.
