California Governor Gavin Newsom is pushing back and calling for unity after receiving sharp public criticism from actor Halle Berry, who condemned his repeated vetoes of a menopause-care bill and suggested he is unfit for the presidency.
Halle Berry’s criticism
Berry, speaking at The New York Times’ DealBook Summit, directly confronted Newsom’s decision to reject Assembly Bill 432, legislation that would have expanded insurance coverage for menopause-related treatment across California.
“In my great state of California, my very own governor, Gavin Newsom, has vetoed our menopause bill not one, but two years, in a row,” the 59-year-old actor and women’s health advocate said.
“But that’s OK because he’s not going to be governor forever,” she added.
She then escalated her criticism: “With the way he’s overlooked women — half the population — by devaluing us in mid-life, he probably should not be our next president, either,” she said.
Newsom 2028

Newsom, who has acknowledged he is considering a 2028 presidential bid, reportedly reacted quickly to the remarks.
His term as governor ends in January 2027, and due to term limits, he cannot run again.
“Yeah, I’d be lying otherwise,” he previously told CBS News when asked if he would give “serious thought” to a White House run. “I’d just be lying. And I’m not — I can’t do that.”
The vetoed bill, also known as the Menopause Care Equity Act, had bipartisan support and would have ensured insurance coverage for treating symptoms associated with menopause and perimenopause. It also aimed to improve physician education and expand menopause-specific curriculum in medical schools.
Newsom team’s response

In a statement to Newsweek, a spokesperson for Newsom emphasized that the governor shares Berry’s commitment to improving access to care for women. However, they said he blocked the legislation because “as written, it would have unintentionally raised health care costs for millions of working women and working families already stretched thin — something he’s determined to avoid.”
The spokesperson added, “We’re confident that by working together this year, we can expand access to essential menopause treatment while protecting women from higher bills.”
Women-care funding

According to TMZ, Newsom said that his team had spoken with Berry’s manager and that they were “reconciling this.”
He also told the outlet that Berry was unaware the administration had already included new menopause-care funding in next year’s proposed state budget, which is scheduled to be released January 10. Sources told the outlet that the governor’s office had not planned to announce the budget details yet, but Berry’s criticism accelerated the timeline.
