Reeves ‘fighting for political survival’ and facing revolt over income tax raid

“Rachel Reeves is “fighting for her political survival” as she prepares to raise taxes on millions of workers in a manifesto-breaking Budget, Labour MPs have warned. A rising number of the Chancellor’s backbenchers are criticising her, saying she is “running out of road” and that her Budget will “go down like a bucket of sick”. Other Labour MPs have started to go on the record with their criticisms, saying Ms Reeves will be “lucky to be here by Christmas”. On Friday, the Chancellor told the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) that she planned to raise income tax in the Budget. She is considering a 2p increase to income tax, which will be offset by a 2p cut to National Insurance (NI), allowing her to argue that “working people” are being protected.” Sunday Telegraph

BBC to apologise for doctored Trump speech

“The BBC will apologise for the misleading editing of a Donald Trump speech in a Panorama documentary, the Telegraph can disclose. Samir Shah, the BBC’s chairman, will write to the culture, media and sport committee on Monday to express regret for the way the speech, made on the day of the Jan 6 2021 Capitol riot, was spliced together. The apology will heap further pressure on Tim Davie, the BBC’s director general, to quit over an 8,000-word dossier compiled by a whistleblower that alleged widespread bias within the corporation. The Telegraph has previously disclosed that both Mr Davie and Mr Shah were warned of the doctored footage in May but appear to have kept quiet.” – Sunday Telegraph

UK to announce plans to emulate stringent Danish immigration system

“Shabana Mahmood is to announce changes to the UK’s immigration rules modelled on the Danish system, largely seen as among the most stringent in Europe, the Guardian understands. Last month, the home secretary dispatched officials to Denmark to study its border control and asylum policies. Denmark’s tighter rules on family reunions and restricting some refugees to a temporary stay are among the policies being looked at. Mahmood will announce the changes later this month, according to the BBC, which first reported the plans.” – Observer

Right to criticise Islam is protected under British law, judge rules

“The view that Islam is problematic and should be criticised is a protected belief under equalities law, a judge has ruled. Patrick Lee, 61, was found guilty of misconduct by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) last April over posts on X. After a four-year disciplinary process, he was banned from the professional body and ordered to pay nearly £23,000 in costs. The trade body ruled that 42 of his posts that criticised Islam, including calling the Prophet Mohammed a “monster”, were “either offensive or inflammatory or both”, adding that 29 were “designed to demean or insult Muslims”. But following an employment tribunal hearing, the actuary has won legal protection for his beliefs.” Sunday Telegraph

Badenoch: We must give the young a nation they’d be proud to fight for

“One of the things that struck me most powerfully at the wonderful 80th anniversary of VE and VJ Day celebrations earlier this year was that, sadly but inevitably, we are losing our living link to those who actually experienced them. Like the Great War, soon the Second World War will be out of living memory. And as it fades, so too does our chance to hear the stories directly from those who lived through it. Remembrance Sunday is about telling these stories. It’s about remembering the individual acts of courage and the sacrifices families made in defence of our country. But the more time passes from these moments when Britain stood together, the more Remembrance Sunday serves another purpose. We remember to remind us that we are part of something bigger than ourselves. That all of the comfort and freedom we now enjoy is thanks to people we never met, fighting and dying to defend a country they thought worth defending.” – Sunday Telegraph

Braverman praise for Farage fuels defection rumours

Suella Braverman has heaped praise on “courageous” Nigel Farage, applauding his “sheer determination, resilience and consistency”. The remarks from the Tory MP and former home secretary, whom political observers have long had on defection watch, will fuel speculation about her future. The comments come just weeks after Rael Braverman, her husband, expressed support for Reform on social media, saying: “They are our last chance to save this country.” Mrs Braverman revealed in an interview that what she admired about Mr Farage was that “he has been consistent and he has been right”. – Sunday Telegraph

Race to replace Mandelson narrows to two

“The race to be appointed His Majesty’s ambassador to the US has narrowed to two candidates: Varun Chandra, the business adviser to Sir Keir Starmer, and Christian Turner, the British permanent representative to the United Nations in New York. The Telegraph can reveal there were five heavyweight applicants for the post vacated when Lord Mandelson was fired because of his connections to paedophile Jeffrey Epstein. But three sources familiar with the process said Mr Chandra, 41, was the frontrunner having taken a central role in securing a trade deal with Washington earlier this year.” – Sunday Telegraph
