The music world is mourning the loss of a pioneer in the world of punk who died on Friday at the age of 75,

David Johansen, known to many as frontman for New York Dolls and also by the name of his solo-recording alter ego Buster Poindexter, passed away after a battle with cancer, as Billboard reports.

Music legend’s death confirmed

Confirming the death to Billboard was a representative for the beloved figure, who stated, “David Johansen died at home in NYC on Friday afternoon holding hands with his wife, Mara Hennessey, and daughter Leah, surrounded by music, flowers, and love.”

The representative added, “He died of natural causes after nearly a decade of illness,” though it was only in February that the musician went public with the news that he was in a fight with stage 4 cancer as well as a brain tumor.

Adding to Johansen’s recent health woes was a fall that occurred in November, which left him with a broken back, an incident that led him to announce, “We’ve been living with my illness for a long time, still having fun, seeing friends and family, carrying on, but this tumble the day after Thanksgiving really brought us to a whole new level of debilitation.”

He said at the time, “This is the worst pain I’ve ever experienced in my entire life. I’ve never been one to ask for help, but this is an emergency. Thank you.”

Johansen’s family also started a fundraising campaign to assist with his ongoing care needs, saying, “He’s never made his diagnosis public, as he and my mother Mara are generally very private people, but we feel compelled to share this now, due to the increasingly severe financial burden our family is facing.”

Iconic career, remembered

Johansen became a member of the New York Dolls in 1971, and the band began to make a name for itself around Manhattan, and its eventual debut album rose to what may have been a disappointing 116 on the Billboard 200.

The group’s second album, In Too Much Too Soon, climbed only to the 167th spot, and though the band parted ways in the mid 70s, its members came back together in the 2000s to play in reunion concerns and to create three albums that received approving responses from critics.

Johansen also was the force behind four solo albums, and it was his 1987 Buster Poindexter album, through which he introduced his lounge-singing alter ego of the same name, that he made his popular breakthrough with the song “Hot, Hot, Hot,” as Fox News notes.

As his illnesses and ancillary health woes took an unbearable toll, Johansen maintained a stoic approach, with his wife Mara stating, “He’s been nurtured by the love of his wife and daughter, while trying to spare his friends, colleagues and fans and keep his troubles private. He’s always been like this. He claims it’s because he’s half Norwegian.”

Left to mourn Johansen are his wife Mara, daughter Leah, and millions of fans the world over who will continue to bask in the musical artistry that will live on for generations.
