Achieving world peace won’t be easy, even with a veteran negotiator at the helm.

President-elect Donald Trump earned accolades for his involvement with a Gaza cease-fire deal brokered between the U.S., Qatar and Egypt, despite Joe Biden attempting to take credit.

Trump made headlines saying there would be β€œhell to pay” if U.S. hostages held by Hamas in Gaza weren’t released. Trump’s fiery rhetoric appeared to get the ball rolling for potential peace and the release of Americans.

The celebrations were cut short, however, when Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stopped the Israel Cabinet from finalizing the deal on Thursday.

β€œHamas is reneging on the understandings and creating a last-minute crisis that is preventing an agreement,” a statement from Netanyahu’s office said. β€œThe Israeli cabinet will not convene until the mediators notify Israel that Hamas has accepted all elements of the agreement.”

The deal was to go into effect on January 19th β€” the day before Trump’s Inauguration.

The Biden administration appeared to take credit for the deal on Wednesday announcing that it would be enacted in three phases, with the first phase taking up to six weeks.

It would include β€œa full and complete cease-fire, withdrawal of Israeli forces from all the populated areas of Gaza, and the release of a number of hostages held by Hamas, including women and elderly and the wounded. And I’m proud to say Americans will be part of that hostage release and phase one as well. And the vice president and I cannot wait to welcome them home,” Biden said.

For now, it looks like it’s back to the drawing board for Trump to get the deal finalized. The good news is, that it should be harder for the Biden admin to claim credit for potential peace deals with his time in the Oval Office running out.

Meanwhile, Netanyahu’s office stated that the Isreal Cabinet won’t reconvene to vote until β€œHamas backs down,” Fox News reported.

For its part, Hamas pushed back on Netanyahu’s claims saying that the group is committed to the agreement.
