U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director Todd Lyons has sent a letter to Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul urging the state to honor ICE arrest detainers for more than 4,000 criminal illegal aliens currently in custody.
The letter calls on Illinois officials to prioritize public safety and cooperate with federal immigration enforcement. According to ICE, Illinois’ refusal to honor detainers has led to the release of 1,768 criminal illegal aliens since January 20.
The agency reports that those released include individuals charged with or convicted of five homicides, 141 assaults, 23 burglaries, four robberies, 24 dangerous drug offenses, 15 weapons offenses, and 10 sexual predatory offenses.
ICE previously sent a letter to Attorney General Raoul in September requesting cooperation, but according to a release, his office did not respond.
Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin criticized Illinois officials in the release, saying Governor J.B. Pritzker and other state leaders are releasing dangerous individuals back into communities. McLaughlin called on the governor’s administration to honor ICE detainers, describing the practice as “common sense” and warning that failure to do so puts American lives at risk.
The release highlights several cases of criminal aliens whose detainers were not honored but who were later arrested or removed by ICE. Among them is Victor Manuel Mendoza-Garcia, a Mexican national convicted of aggravated kidnapping, who was arrested by ICE on November 12. Another case involves Juan Morales Martinez of Guatemala, linked to a fatal vehicle crash, who was arrested by ICE after release from a county jail and subsequently removed from the United States.
