A Somali-run daycare center in Minneapolis, Nokomis Day Care Center, was reportedly broken into overnight Tuesday, with authorities confirming that critical documents, including records of children and staff, were stolen.
The incident comes as federal and state authorities continue investigating alleged widespread fraud in Minnesota’s childcare system, some of which involves Somali-operated facilities.
Nasrulah Mohamed, manager of Nokomis Day Care Center, said the break-in likely occurred between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m., with a door damaged and portions of a wall gutted.
The Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) confirmed the incident and said surveillance cameras may have recorded the suspect or suspects, though officials have not released details on any leads.
Mohamed reported that the center had received threatening and “hateful” messages in the days preceding the break-in, attributing part of the attention to a viral 42-minute video by independent journalist Nick Shirley.
The video, which explored potential fraud at multiple Minneapolis childcare facilities, drew millions of views and gained attention from federal figures, including President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance.
“This is devastating news, and we don’t know why this is targeting our Somali community, as one video made by a specific individual made this all happen,” Mohamed said.
Nokomis Day Care Center is licensed to care for up to 71 children, including infants, toddlers and preschool-age students.
The facility had two minor violations in October 2025—one related to nutrition menus and one documenting teacher qualifications—which were corrected shortly thereafter, according to Fox News.
The center was not among those featured in Shirley’s video.
Observers have noted that the daycare appeared largely inactive prior to the break-in, Townhall reports.
Social media posts and neighborhood reports highlighted that Nokomis maintained two stationary vans and functional alarm systems, raising questions about whether the incident was coincidental or tied to viral coverage of alleged fraud.
“Now that daycare center is the site of an alleged break-in. How convenient,” one social media post remarked.
The break-in occurs amid ongoing federal investigations into Minnesota’s child care fraud, which is reportedly tied to misused federal funds totaling up to $1 billion.
Federal prosecutors have charged dozens of individuals, and the Department of Health and Human Services has frozen certain child care payments to the state pending verification of legitimate disbursements.
In 2025, Minnesota reportedly received $185 million in federal child care funding.
Critics of the viral coverage argue that focusing on Somali-run daycare centers risks misrepresenting the broader community and creating unnecessary fear.
Mohamed emphasized that the Somali community operates hundreds of licensed child care facilities that maintain high standards and function legally.
“This is frightening and exhausting because this is happening to us Somali communities. We are supposed to stand with each other and help each other through everything that’s happening,” he said.
“There are hundreds of Somali daycares doing excellent work, and one individual’s video should not put them all at risk.”
Authorities are reviewing the stolen documentation, which includes sensitive enrollment and financial records.
Nokomis Day Care Center remains closed while investigators assess the damage and attempt to recover missing documents.
Mohamed expressed hope that the facility can safely reopen once the investigation concludes.
The incident underscores the delicate balance between oversight of public child care funding and protecting minority-owned businesses from harassment or undue scrutiny.
As federal and state officials continue to probe alleged fraud, communities and regulators alike are navigating the intersection of accountability, safety and equity in the childcare sector.
