Pathetic: Minneapolis Public Schools last week announced theyโll allow remote attendance for students at least through mid-February โ and teachers unions are pushing for similar policies throughout the metro region.
Pathetic: The pretext โ ongoing ICE activities โ impacts only a few blocks here and there; this is just performative politics serving adults at the expense of learning.ย
The school system acted at the request of the Minneapolis Federation of Educators; teacher unions are always looking for excuses for their members to slough off work, and this has the added advantage of hyping the supposed ICE menace: Along with every other local lefty institution, the union is โdemandingโ ICEโs exit from the city.
One scandal here is how so many teachersโ unions now prioritize left-wing politics over education, as last yearโs National Education Association convention made unmistakable. (Bonus sign: Their official anti-Trump agenda managed to misspell โfascism.โ)
The other outrage is the pretense that long-term โremote learningโ is any kind of learning at all: The nationโs children will be years recovering from the learning loss inflicted by the pandemic school shutdowns (which the teachers unions pushed to extend as long as possible).
Any group of โeducatorsโ pushing remote learning for anything beyond a day or two in some real emergency plainly doesnโt really care if the kids learn, period.
And the de facto teacher-union control of so many US public school systems is the main reason those schools keep spending ever-more, even as test scores show the kids learning ever-less.
