The National Media and Infocommunications Authority (NMHH) and the Bethesda Children’s Hospital have signed a cooperation agreement to promote healthy digital device use among children, the NMHH announced on Tuesday.
Through joint research, scientific conferences, and awareness campaigns, the partners aim to address the risks of early and excessive screen exposure and its negative effects on children’s development. The NMHH and its Child Protection Internet Roundtable have also joined the hospital’s scientific charter, which advocates for reducing children’s screen time.
The agreement was signed by Director General of Bethesda Hospital György János Velkey and President of the NMHH András Koltay. The institutions plan to support parents, teachers, and healthcare professionals with research, publications, and public information campaigns to help them make informed decisions for children in the digital age.
Velkey emphasized that children’s health includes mental well-being as well as physical, adding that responsible, collective reflection is needed when it comes to the use of smart devices. Koltay noted that the NMHH contributes to effective online child protection not only through regulation but also via broad social and scientific partnerships.
The collaboration combines Bethesda’s medical expertise with the NMHH’s research and educational work to study children’s digital habits and offer practical guidance for families and educators.
By signing the agreement, the NMHH officially joined the hospital’s screen-time reduction charter, already endorsed by around 40 professional organizations. The document advises against any screen use under the age of three, discourages personal smart devices before age ten, and recommends avoiding them altogether before age 14. The goal is to help children rediscover the joy of physical activity, creative play, and real-world social interaction.
According to NMHH’s latest Digital Parenting 2025 study, three-quarters of Hungarian children own a mobile phone by age ten, with the average age for receiving their first device at just over nine years. Even among four- to six-year-olds, 7 per cent already have their own device, while nine- to ten-year-olds spend an average of 172 minutes per day on screens during weekends—a 50 per cent increase over the past five years.
