A Virginia man was sentenced Friday to spend the rest of his life behind bars for a string of horrific attacks on women that spanned several years.
In July, 44-year-old Thomas O’Bryen was convicted of second-degree murder, abduction, forcible sodomy, attempted forcible sodomy, two counts of malicious wounding, and two counts of using a firearm during a felony. On Friday, 4th Judicial District Judge Devon R. Paige sentenced O’Bryen to 58 years in prison, with another 70 years suspended under certain conditions.
The judge criticized O’Bryen for preying on vulnerable women, saying he treated them like “disposable commodities” to punish when they didn’t comply with his demands.
O’Bryen’s violence began in October 2021, when he repeatedly stabbed 51-year-old Angela Renee Joyner inside his SUV. To escape, Joyner jumped from the moving vehicle but collapsed in an intersection in Norfolk. She was rushed to the hospital but died the following day from her injuries, which included blunt force trauma compounded by multiple stab wounds. The case went cold until O’Bryen was arrested in 2023.
In early 2023, O’Bryen attacked two more women in predawn parking lots. In March, he forced a woman at gunpoint to perform sexual acts inside his SUV. When she resisted, he shot her in the head. Miraculously, she survived after jumping from the moving vehicle, though she broke her ankle.
Just over a month later, in April, O’Bryen picked up another woman, again in a parking lot at around 3:30 a.m., and attempted a sexual assault. The victim agreed to a sexual act in exchange for money, but O’Bryen tried to force her further and threatened her with a gun. She also jumped from the moving vehicle and survived.
Police traced both vehicles to O’Bryen’s home using witness descriptions. Investigators recovered evidence linking him to all the crimes, including Ms. Joyner’s driver’s license, a gun, bullet casings, and blood inside his vehicles. O’Bryen later admitted to nearly all the crimes, though he denied knowing that Joyner had died and denied shooting the second victim.
“My heart breaks for the victims of Mr. O’Bryen’s violent crimes,” said Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney Ramin Fatehi. “While his past abuse may explain how he became the person he is, it is no excuse for his crimes. The violence of O’Bryen’s actions requires that he spend the rest of his life in prison. We hope this sentence brings closure and a measure of peace to the victims and their families.”
