President Donald Trump is encountering significant resistance from within his own party as questions mount over his handling of foreign policy, particularly military strikes tied to drug trafficking in the Caribbean and his proposed framework for ending the Ukraine war.
While Trump remains popular among Republican voters, Knewz.com has learned that several GOP lawmakers are openly challenging his strategy, citing constitutional authority, legal risks and concerns that U.S. interests are being compromised.
Trump faces Republican pushback on Venezuela and the Caribbean
Trump’s expanded use of military force against suspected drug traffickers in the Caribbean, coupled with rhetoric suggesting possible land action in Venezuela, has unsettled some Republicans who have embraced an “America First” view of foreign policy and oppose involvement in regime change abroad.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Georgia Republican who has recently criticized Trump on other issues, wrote on X, “Fix health insurance. Not regime change in Venezuela.”
She added separately that Congress has “the sole power to declare war in Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution.”
GOP Senator Rand Paul echoed those concerns, sharing a National Review article questioning the legality of the strikes and posting a passage warning that it is unlawful “to apply lethal force to those who surrender or who are injured.”
The criticism intensified after reports that a second strike on a suspected drug boat was allegedly ordered to leave “no survivors,” a claim Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has denied.
Lawmakers demand Congressional oversight
Other Republicans have raised alarms about bypassing Congress.
GOP Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky questioned the administration’s priorities, writing, “How is it that we have money for regime change in Venezuela but not money to pay air traffic controllers in our country?”
Lawmakers from both parties have called for briefings and oversight as questions persist about the legal basis for the strikes.
Rep. Mike Turner of Ohio said on Face the Nation that if reports about unlawful orders were accurate, “that would be an illegal act.”
He added that Congress is investigating whether any actions fell outside what had been disclosed to lawmakers.
Trump’s Ukraine peace plan criticized
Trump’s proposal to end the Russia-Ukraine war has also triggered resistance, as critics say elements of the plan would reward Russian aggression by forcing Ukraine to concede territory and limit its military.
Rep. Don Bacon, a centrist Nebraska Republican who is retiring at the end of his term, said he is not seeing “moral clarity” from the White House, warning against a foreign policy driven by profit rather than principle.
Rep. Turner cautioned that “you can’t be America first and pro-Russia,” noting Moscow’s cyberattacks and nuclear threats against the U.S.
Senior republicans speak out against Trump
Some of the Republican Party’s most senior figures have been blunt in criticizing Trump’s foreign policy moves.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell wrote that appeasing Russian President Vladimir Putin would be “disastrous to America’s interests.”
Sen. Roger Wicker added that Ukraine “should not be forced to give up its lands” to Putin, calling the proposal deeply flawed.
