Evaders in the loo
I have a great way for the MTA to stop some fare evaders (“$1 Billion,” Sept 11).
Have the conductors on the LIRR go after the people who get on the train and go directly into the restroom. These people lock themselves in there for all or part of the trip to avoid paying their fare, inconveniencing paying passengers.
As an LIRR commuter for 43 years, I see this almost everyday. The conductors turn a blind eye but have their hands out for massive raises when the next contract negotiation comes around.

Thinking is math
For a majority of students, the sole reason for taking math is to learn how to think better (“New lows in testing,” Sept. 10).
But for the past 35 years and counting, more and more thinking has been taken out of math — making it more boring, less useful and having much longer mechanical methods.
In addition, the instant these students press the calculator button is the instant they stop thinking.

Not a climate cult
One of conservatives’ favorite rhetorical gambits is to describe environmentalists as “cultists” (“Apocalypse Not,” Editorial, Sept. 8).
If being concerned about climate change means I’m part of a cult, it’s the strangest cult ever — one whose members dream of their beliefs being invalidated by robust scientific evidence. If in fact sea levels aren’t rising faster, I’ll be delighted to be proven wrong (an attitude never found in genuine cultists).
But it’s worth noting that nations like Tuvalu and the Maldives are starting to relocate whole communities because seas are encroaching on their lands. Being concerned about ordinary people and their lives is simple human decency, not a mark of irrationality.

JustICE in the US
Following the Supreme Court’s decision about what ICE is permitted to do in California, it is clear that the principle of having three separate and equal branches of United States government no longer exists (“Court’s ‘go’ on LA raids,” Sept. 9).
SCOTUS is now, officially, a branch of the Trump administration. Shameful and deplorable. Even Ronald Reagan would have found this unthinkable.

No moms blamed
To describe Bethany Mandel’s column about Tylenol and autism as hysterical might label me a misogynist, but clearly her straw man (moms) has no place in the discussion of whether Tylenol causes or contributes to autism (“Tylenol & Autism: Blaming Moms Again,” Bethany Mandel, PostOpinion, Sept. 11).
No sensible person is blaming pregnant women who’ve taken Tylenol or (years ago) thalidomide. The issue is whether Tylenol is entirely safe to take during pregnancy. Why would Mandel want RFK to stop trying to learn the answer?

Praise for the blitz
I applaud the Trump administration’s decision to launch Operation Midway Blitz (“DHS sweep in Chicago,” Sept. 9).
It’s the government’s responsibility to ensure that threats to our security are removed. Operation Midway Blitz will not only help Illinois, but the country as a whole. It sends a message that illegal immigration and lawlessness will no longer be tolerated.
