If you’ve subscribed to Tinder’s membership program in California, you may be entitled to swipe right on a cash payout.
A class action lawsuit alleges that the popular dating app Tinder’s premium membership options, which were implemented on or about March 1, 2015, discriminated against users based on age. It says that the plaintiff, a user named Allan Candelore who was over the age of 30, signed up for a Tinder Plus subscription at the rate of $19.99, whereas users under the age of 30 were charged either $9.99 or $14.99.
“Tinder has brazenly announced and employed a multi-tiered pricing plan that treats consumers unequally based solely on their age,” alleged the lawsuit, citing that Tinder violated the Unruh Civil Rights Act. The act does not explicitly specify age as a protected characteristic, but age has been deemed applicable in similar contexts.
Tinder has not admitted to wrongdoing in the settlement, but agreed to pay out $60.5 million to resolve the claims that both Tinder Plus and Tinder Gold were in violation of the statutes. The beginning of the applicable time window depends on the age of the applicant: March 2, 2015, if you were over 29, or March 2, 2016, if you were over 28. The applicable period closes Feb. 10, 2019.
Cash payouts will depend on the amount the users paid Tinder, but the expected amount per user has not been specified. A final approval hearing is scheduled to take place on May 20, 2026, and the deadline for filing as a part of the settlement is Aug. 18, 2026.
