FBI Director Kash Patel has indicated that the bureau’s forthcoming revelations regarding whether informants were present during the January 6 Capitol events will “‘surprise and shock’ the American people.
Patel provided this update during an exclusive conversation with Fox News chief political anchor Bret Baier, which aired on the network’s Special Report on Wednesday, addressing the bureau’s inquiry into the Capitol unrest.
‘People have had questions about January 6th, whether or not there were FBI sources – not agents, sources – on the ground during January 6. And I told you I would get you the definitive answer to that,’ Patel said.
He further asserted,
‘And we have, and we are in the process again of working with our partners to divulge that information – and it’s coming.’
Patel also remarked that the details about the FBI’s actions surrounding the Capitol incident could “‘surprise and shock people because of what past FBI leaders have said about it.’”
In the past, former FBI Director Christopher Wray had sidestepped Congressional questions regarding the bureau’s participation in the Capitol riots.
However, a critical report issued last year by Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz disclosed that the FBI had utilized over two dozen confidential human sources among the crowd outside the Capitol — three of whom were explicitly assigned to be at the protest.
Out of these three individuals, one unlawfully entered the Capitol building, while the other two accessed restricted areas surrounding the complex.
Patel emphasized that the American public has persistently questioned the extent of the FBI’s involvement in the Capitol incident.
He assured Baier that updates regarding the bureau’s role in these events are forthcoming.
The investigation also stated that none of these confidential human sources were permitted to breach the Capitol, commit illegal activities, or ‘encourage others to commit illegal acts.’
The report also mentioned that one confidential source had direct contact with leaders of far-right groups like the Oath Keepers and had knowledge of the Proud Boys’ discussions to obstruct Congress from certifying the 2020 presidential election results.
Confidential human sources assist the FBI by supplying information about groups that threaten national security, such as those involved in criminal, terrorist, or espionage activity.
The DOJ notes that these informants can be compensated for tips or information shared with federal authorities.
As the report became public in December, Vice President JD Vance observed that none of the informants who entered the Capitol faced prosecution.
‘For those keeping score at home, this was labeled a dangerous conspiracy theory months ago,’
he said.
Patel presently acknowledges that the report — titled “the FBI’s Handling of its Confidential Human Sources and Intelligence Collection Efforts in the Lead Up to the Jan 6, 2021 Electoral Certification” — is
‘definitely a piece of the truth.’
A critical report released by Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz last year found that the FBI positioned more than two dozen confidential human sources in the crowd outside the Capitol.
At the same time, former FBI Director Christopher Wray continued to avoid Congressional queries about the agency’s conduct on January 6, 2021.
Upon being sworn in, Patel pledged to increase transparency at the FBI, which he had previously criticized as ‘one of the most cunning and powerful arms of the Deep State’ and accused of hiding its own misconduct.
Patel explained to Baier on Wednesday that part of his goal was to provide Americans with the answers they
‘deserve.’
He also shared that further information will be revealed concerning other investigations, such as into the pipe bombs found near the Democratic National Committee and Republican National Committee the day prior to the Capitol riot.
The FBI has made security footage of the suspect available since 2021. The most recent release, from January 2 of this year, presented grainy surveillance video showing a masked individual wearing a hoodie, making identification difficult.
Meanwhile, House Republicans published an 80-page document detailing ‘serious, and largely overlooked, security failure on January 6’, including the ‘delayed’ detection of the bombs near the two party headquarters and a ‘chaotic response’ when they were located.
Patel’s deputy, Dan Bongino, subsequently alleged that the bomb threat was an ‘inside job.’
In a September episode of his podcast, Bongino claimed,
‘I can say with almost absolute certainty from a whistleblower who was there who strongly believes it was a government contractor who planted those bombs to set up a fake assassination plot on Kamala Harris to basically generate sympathy, to shut down people from questioning the vote on January 6.’
Surveillance footage captured the suspect wearing a mask and a hoodie.
Images depict an explosive device positioned outside the Republican National Committee office in Washington DC on January 6, 2021.
Bongino, referencing questions posed by Republican Rep. Thomas Massie, listed his concerns during his broadcast.
‘Videos are disappearing. Nobody seems to want to know who it is. Why would the FBI not want to know who it is? Because if they put out a video showing you who it is and someone recognizes them, this whole thing’s going to blow wide open,’
he stated.
Bongino continued,
‘I’m telling you they are going to come out and say those pipe bombs are just a training exercise when they weren’t.’
He further admitted,
‘I can’t trust anyone. I can’t trust anybody any more,’
labeling the incident
‘the biggest political scandal of our time.’
He added,
‘It is a story nobody wants to talk about, which is weird, because if the insurrection they claim is true, why wouldn’t Kamala Harris want to talk about nearly being killed by a pipe bomb during the insurrection?’
Bongino concluded,
‘Why does she not want to talk about this? Because my story is true. Those pipe bombs were put there as Plan A if the Republicans on certification day in front of an entire national media audience on the House floor … objected and started talking about the problems in the election.’
Patel also indicated the FBI will soon disclose results from its probe into a suspicious bag of cocaine discovered at the White House in 2023.
Alongside the two Capitol riot-related cases, Patel stated that the public should expect answers regarding the cocaine found at the White House during President Biden’s administration.
The substance was discovered two days after Hunter Biden, who has openly struggled with drug addiction, had departed the White House with his family just ahead of the July 4th holiday weekend.
A Secret Service investigation about the cocaine was concluded within two weeks without identifying a suspect, as surveillance video could not determine the owner.
A statement from the authorities read,
‘Without physical evidence, the investigation will not be able to single out a person of interest from the hundreds of individuals who passed through the vestibule where the cocaine was discovered.’
At the time of the cocaine’s discovery, the Biden family was not in Washington, and they have consistently denied any linkage between the drugs and any of their relatives.
Patel also confirmed that new findings would be shared regarding the FBI’s investigation into alleged links between Trump and Russia after the 2016 election. As DailyMail.com exclusively reported, a contractor reportedly presented false testimony to Congress concerning how the probe began.
Nellie Ohr was originally accused of giving false testimony to Congress, according to a newly declassified FBI document from 2019.
The document alleges she lied about not having knowledge of the Trump-Russia investigation, and denied unlawfully sharing her research about Russia with anyone outside her workplace.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley has since commented that she
‘showed contempt for congressional oversight and the American people.’
