Recent polling indicates that former Vice President Kamala Harris is losing momentum as a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential race.

The most recent survey from AtlasIntel reveals that Harris currently has 16.6 percent backing among Democrats likely to vote.

Harris now trails New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who has support from 19.4 percent of likely voters, as progressive groups appear to coalesce around Ocasio-Cortez, who is outspoken about her agenda to transform the country along socialist lines.

At the same time, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has taken the lead, securing 31.5 percent support, making him the unexpected frontrunner in the poll.

Buttigieg, aged 43, previously mounted a bid for the Democratic nomination in 2020 and served as Transportation Secretary — a tenure marked by significant challenges.

He managed to amass more than $75 million in campaign funding and captured 17 percent of the vote before withdrawing from the race and endorsing Joe Biden.

Other notable Democratic contenders in the poll include Senator Cory Booker (New Jersey) with 10.4 percent, California Governor Gavin Newsom with 7.1 percent, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro at 4.8 percent, and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer with 3.7 percent.

In a recent appearance on Substack Live, Buttigieg commented that “any kind of decision process there is a long way off.”

He added, “There are times I follow that process and decided to run, and there are times I followed that process and decided not to run — and the process can lead you to surprising places.”

On the Republican side, Vice-President J.D. Vance maintains a strong lead, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio in second place.

The ASME survey shows Vance favored by 37.3 percent, while Rubio draws support from 18.7 percent of respondents.

Donald Trump Jr. has received 8.8 percent, and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is at 7 percent.

About 16 percent of participants selected “none of the above.”

Nate Silver, a well-known election analyst and pollster, has praised AtlasIntel as “top-rated” and highlighted its track record as the most precise pollster in the 2024 presidential election.
