John Oliver clearly has a real interest in men being in women’s spaces.
Why else would the British comedian spend more than 42 minutes of his HBO show “Last Week Tonight” arguing that men who transition to live as ladies have little or no discernible physical advantage over women?
He basically said there isn’t enough research about men on cross-sex hormones.
But hey, this wasn’t really a contested issue until about eight years ago, when trans athletes started popping up in women’s competitions — and winning.
‘”We have no research about how being trans or undergoing gender-affirming treatment impacts athlete performance in teens,” Oliver said on Sunday’s show.
However, separate sex categories for sports were always backed by science and, well, common sense.
Oliver seems to be stuck in 2022 — when our society and all of our institutions were held hostage by trans activists, forced to pretend that biological men playing women’s sports was fair and safe to, er, women?
Back then, any dissent was deemed transphobic and punished by cancellation.
But now, we’ve seen what can happen. And what ironic timing it was for a defense of dudes in women’s sports to air this week.
On the same day as Oliver’s show, a UK women’s pool tournament final was decided between two trans women. Only days earlier, Lia Rose, a trans high-schooler who took last place in a JV boys competition two years earlier, won the high jump at a varsity girls’ meet in Oregon. Two weeks ago, another trans high schooler in the Portland area, Ada Gallagher, blew away the competition in a women’s 400-meter race.
And there’s fencer Stephanie Turner, who refused to compete against a transgender rival last week.
In fact, Oliver used clips of Fox News covering Turner’s story to argue that trans athletes in women’s sports is a moral panic — a right-wing bogeyman invented to be cruel.
But it’s actually a far-left obsession that attempted to rewire all of society and make us bend biological truths in favor of ideological obsessions.
That’s why we care — because we care about the truth.
And when I say we, I mean, people — women and men — from across the right and the left. I can think of no other issue that is as purple or holds such a consensus.
And yet, Oliver is content to gaslight us all.
“There are vanishingly few trans girls competing in high schools anywhere,” Oliver said last year on his show. “Even if there were more, trans kids — like all kids — vary in athletic ability and there is no evidence they pose any threat to safety or fairness,” he claimed, adding that the “biggest concern” for most female high school athletes is “the creepy assistant volleyball coach who keeps liking their posts on f–king Instagram.”
Examples of these “vanishingly few trans girls” continue to proliferate across the country, though only one instance is enough. One biological male taking a spot over a female, defeating a female, or injuring a female is a bridge too far.
To make his case, Oliver on Sunday attacked a handful of messengers, not the message.
First he aired a clip of Lance Armstrong saying men transitioning and competing in women’s sports is unfair — then pronounced, well, if cheater Lance Armstrong is against it under the guise that it’s cheating, the argument has no merit.
Oliver also mocked JK Rowling and former college swimmer Riley Gaines for standing up for the rights of women to have separate spaces and sports.
I’m old enough to remember when the left called that mansplaining. But if you pile glops of smugness and piety on your argument in the name of being “progressive,” it’s suddenly withering to your opponent.
Also compassionate, kind and righteous. That’s what Oliver is saying: He’s the good guy.
He showed clips of a few trans kids talking about how sports has benefited them. No one is saying they can’t compete. But they don’t belong in girls’ sports.
As for the outcry from girls who have protested competing against and changing clothes in front of biological males — screw them, right?
Though Oliver’s view is, thankfully, being pushed into the loony category, he’s not alone in his misogyny. Last week, Elie Mystal said on “The Breakfast Club” that trans girls need to be saved by any means, including having access to ladies’ rooms.
“The cost is that some girls have to be a little bit uncomfortable in a bathroom at a high school,” the political commentator said. “that is a trade that I am willing to make and that is a trade that I and, I think, society should be willing [to make].”
How big of Mystal and Oliver to make that blanket trade for females.
But we can speak for ourselves — and we’re saying, no thanks.
