U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, revealed on Thursday that former Special Counsel Jack Smith “spied” on him also during his so-called investigation into the Jan. 6, 2021, protest at the U.S. Capitol.
Last month, eight Republican senators were surprised to learn that Smith was snooping through their phone records as part of the Arctic Frost investigation — the story was short-lived in the media-driven news cycle.
“They spied on President Trump. They spied on Senators. Now, we just learned, they spied on me,” Jordan wrote on X.
“If they can do it to us, they can do it to you,” Jordan warned Americans in a social media post.

Smith’s probe began at the Biden Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) under the codename “Arctic Frost,” resulting in President Donald Trump being indicted on charges related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election. On November 25, 2024, Smith’s team filed a motion to dismiss charges against Trump after he won the 2024 election.
Prosecutor Timothy Duree, who was fired in January, issued a subpoena to Verizon on April 25, 2022, requesting Jordan’s “call detail records,” including text messages and voicemails, according to documents released by the chairman. Magistrate Judge David A. Baker issued a nondisclosure order forcing Verizon to keep quiet about the subpoena.
“Arctic Frost was the vehicle by which partisan FBI agents and DOJ prosecutors could improperly investigate the entire Republican political apparatus. Contrary to what [Jack] Smith has said publicly, this was clearly a fishing expedition,” Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley said last month when he revealed that Smith had issued 197 subpoenas.
Jordan appeared on Fox News’ “Hannity” to discuss being targeted by the DOJ and said it was “worse than we thought.”
“All the way back to January of 2020, they gathered information that told them who I call, who called me, when we called each other, when the call took place, how long the call was and where I was at when I made that call – they got location as well – and they gathered that over a time period of 28 months,” Jordan told host Sean Hannity.
“This is how ridiculous this is and why we are doing everything to get to the bottom of it,” he added.
But many see that the problem with Republicans is that they seldom, if ever, hold anyone accountable for their actions, aside from exploiting the controversy for political gain, and the GOP doesn’t seem to realize, or care, that it makes them look incompetent. It’s a game that people on the right have grown tired of playing.
