New magic man appears
Jamie Allan. His magic show “Amaze” at the New World Stages is the hottest to come through since that guy who took me when I was in high school. Allan’s broken all the records in Chicago and Britain.
Jamie tells me: “I was 5 when I got my magic kit and 7 when I did my first show. I borrowed a 5 pound note from the audience, pretended to burn it then bring it back, but I actually did burn it. I was 5 pounds down — that was less than my earnings. That was big money for me. I was terrified.
“Age 5, my dad made the tricks for me. Scared, I grew up where we didn’t have games. Nothing to distract me. I first did a trick with making billiard balls disappear then I ended up newly producing the four at my fingertips. Now everything costs a lot more.
“Other magicians would gift me things and I’d save my pocket money to buy them. An old magician that had died left his stuff in this antique shop and the antique dealer ended up giving all of it to me cheaply.
“An idea for a trick just doesn’t come. I search for it. Like I did a Houdini trick where I switched places with my assistant who was in a locked box in the sack inside. Then she stood on top of the box and I appeared. Turned out she’d taken the keys with her and put them in her pocket. I had to push this box off the stage with her inside because there was no way to open it.
“American audiences are the best. Americans have more joy. Happy to suspend their disbelief — whereas Brits are a little more cynical.
“Every idea for a trick begins with the end. You start with how it finishes then you try to back everything up and make people not think about that or distract them or misdirect them as you dazzle them.
“I always wanted to be here in the United States. Now I live here, I pushed my career as far as I could in the UK. I did a lot of television there. I’ve done more work in the United States in the last four years than I ever have in Britain.
“I’m aware that most who come to watch me will be the only time they’ll ever see me. I have an incredible team. Been with me a long time. My right-hand man is in charge of everything technical. My beautiful wife Natalie is the lead in the show. We tour with 14 people. Ten shows a week here.”
His show’s off-Broadway, extended through May 24. He is great.
Finding early star quality
LISTEN, most stars had humble beginnings. Mick Jagger was a porter in a London mental hospital . . . Clint Eastwood dug swimming pools for rich people . . . Brad Pitt was outside walking around inside a sandwich board advertising food. He said: “I used to have my hair in a mullet. It helped launch my career. If in the future things get slow, I’ll definitely go back to what works.” So, for Valentine’s Day — get him a snood.
And Dustin Hoffman once dreamed of being a pianist . . . Engelbert Humperdinck? He’ll answer if you call him “Enge.” Even “Humpy.” But never “Dincky.”He had that as a kid . . . Mickey Rourke? He was nicknamed Mickey after Mickey Mantle. His real first name was Philip . . . Remember Eddie Albert? His birth name was Heimberger. He changed it when kids called him “Hamburger.” Joan Crawford was Lucille LeSueur but it sounded too much like “sewer” . . . And Dutch Schultz? Arthur Flegenheimer. And why he changed it? Who the hell cares.
And then there’s the name of our newly elected chief executive. Mayor Crapdammy. Sounds right to me.
