Attorney Mehek Cooke, who’s been tracking these schemes, appeared on Fox News and laid it out plain: a small group of criminals within Ohio’s Somali community is exploiting the state’s home-care program, raking in taxpayer money through fake diagnoses and ghost billing.
Cooke explained how it works: scammers target elderly people, coach them to claim serious health or memory problems, then work with doctors to get them approved for in-home care services—funded entirely by taxpayers. Some medical professionals allegedly take kickbacks for rubber-stamping the approvals. Door-knockers canvass neighborhoods to recruit seniors and families into the program, and once they’re signed up, the fraudsters bill the state for care that’s either unnecessary or never provided at all.
Even more troubling, Cooke said many in the community feel pressured to go along with the scheme. Those who refuse are “excommunicated” from the network and even from patient care. The whistleblowers who’ve come forward say they’re exposing it because the money is being stolen from people who genuinely need help.
This echoes the massive fraud uncovered in Minnesota, where Somali-run nonprofits and shell companies stole hundreds of millions in child nutrition funds during the pandemic, with much of it wired back to Somalia to support Al-Shabaab terrorists. In Ohio, the pattern is the same: organized exploitation of welfare programs, with taxpayer dollars disappearing into private pockets.
The left will scream “xenophobia,” but this is about protecting public money and the vulnerable. When a small group of criminals can drain billions while honest people suffer, it’s time to demand accountability—no matter who they are.
